Over/under that Omicron is no big deal?

Classically, variants are less severe than the original because this is the best long term survival strategy for a virus rather than killing hosts. My guess is that we “manage” our way through this without a major disruption… except for those living in the more authoritarian states.

We may run out of Greek letters for variants soon. That's a big deal.

Try to think creatively… would you take the under or over that it’s no big deal.

The answers to three questions will tell us:

1) Whether the variant is more transmissible than the current, prevalent Delta strain?

2) Does it cause more severe disease?

3) Will it render our immune defenses — from vaccines and prior infections — less effective (a phenomenon known as immune escape)?

[The above from today's NY Times]

I predict the answer to all three questions will be "yes."

Will we shut down? No. We will continue to march forward, navigating the minefield on advice of our public health experts.

No reason for pessimism. And so far it is spreading more among the unvaccinated.

Why do you predict that it will be more severe? I have to say, it seems like you want that.

After all, it will allow the Leftists to continue to try to place controls on the citizens, and it is starting to seem that control of the citizenry is the goal, and not control of the disease. "marching forward"...seems like you guys like playing soldier. I would prefer that we just move forward, in a non-martial way, and just focus on treating the ill and protecting the vulnerable, and stop restricting the healthy and non-vulnerable.

They had to skip Xi in the Greek alphabet...probably because the first variant was the Xi virus.

Forever grateful.

To toast the guy who was pushing for funding of the covid virus research in Wuhan is shameful.

I wonder who else was toasted.

...or should have been learned...from this pandemic (see link).

There are literally tens of thousands of very capable medical professionals working on this latest variant and collaborating..just as they have been doing for decades...let's hope for the best, but prepare for the worst...if that means immediate restrictions, so be it...hang in there.

Wrong. This will cause a nationwide regulatory panic. More regs. More stimulus.
