I've lived overseas and this op-ed perfectly captures the life lived in most of these countries.
As society sinks into decadence the people search for increasingly autocratic rulers, either left or right, to protect them.
If the government is democratic this causes wild swings from one side to the other.
At a certain point those in power take drastic measures to retain this.

Funny thing is... I suspect our legal immigrants are our greatest hope.
They have seen this mess before and want nothing to do with it.
And there is a latent moderate conservatism in our African American community that is just waiting for expression.
Your implied assertion (my opinion) that only "Conservatism" provides 'Hope' for America begs the
question of impending Autocracy from such people...IMO, "Liberals" deserve representation as well ;-)...you get the picture.

The bigger issue is how to rid the country of this fixation on Trump. Both sides are irrationally focused on the sociopath. This is what prevents any reasonable compromise.
It's clear to me that you don't yet grasp the magnitude of what the "Big Lie" and "Insurrection"
means to this country...as the Jan. 6th investigation continues to unfold, i believe that you'll see how that assault on the Capital was not simply a demonstration that got out of hand...over 250 subpoenas for documents and testimony have already been honored...key Trump administration officials are pleading the 5th Amendment...and public hearings will start in the New Year...
This was no "Meh" moment to be swept under the rug...you may still not agree when all is said and done, but I trust that justice will be served and that "sociopath" (good description), along with his key enablers, will suffer the consequences...then we can all, together, move on.
