I hate to claim expertise here (heaven forbid!). But he’s wrong. Or at least he is using numbers that nobody else has.
Say, Chris: what do your "happiness metrics" say?
Oh, and what about suicide rates? And incidence of mental illness? How about human trafficking? Ooh, ooh, what about single-parent families? Oh, and here's another: are people reading more or less than in the past? No, silly, I'm not asking for literacy rates, I'm asking if they're actually reading more?
Isn't this fun? I can come up with a whole slew of statistics to cherry-pick and validate my thesis that world is not "improving!"

He's enjoyable and a smart man. Unfortunately, like other secular humanists (and this is unsurprising), he focuses on material wealth/technological advances/physical health and ignores the fact that with each passing year, human beings become more and more unhappy. He leaves out at least half of the equation. Why do you think it is that as people generally grow wealthier, have better physical health, have more and more tech toys with which to play that people grow more unhappy?
And you're avoiding my questions.
BTW, I take it Pinker is among those who greatly exaggerate what is happening on Western college campuses?
