He said that if someone comes in and presents themselves as an asylum seeker at the border checkpoints, they are processed and released pending a later scheduled hearing date. No separation of families. (This was prior to the executive order.)
The only people detained are those who sneak past the border checkpoints. They do not claim asylum or refugee status at the border. They only claim asylum (if at all) when they are caught. In those cases, the children are separated from their "adult sponsors" (who could be parents, but who could merely be the children's slave owners or pimps...often no way for ICE to tell).

significant numbers of people from legal points of entry, knowing full well that these individuals would then cross illegally. Then, as expected, they're arresting them as a means to manufacture the crisis. I'm for strong borders folks but this seems plausible with Trumpenstein and Sessions at the helm. This issue is gonna backfire on Trump because there is bi-partisan support for a reasonable compromise on securing the border.
To gain support.
Trump on separating children from their parents and the Bill in the Senate ignored by Ryan. Republicans in the House and Senate were more than happy to sit on their hands until the polling data started to roll in. Once the outrage became evident, your folks in Congress grew a spine. I knew this policy was going to fail based on early polling results that, over a week ago, suggested what we learned the day Trump backed down.
Do you really believe it was coincidence that the Reps back down at the exact moment the poll data was released?

Agents were meeting them on the bridge to tell them it was full and to turn back. Thus, they couldn't step foot on U.S. soil and ask for asylum.
