I was just watching CNN and one of these bravehearts in New Bern, NC has already called authorities for a rescue now that they've got a couple of feet of flooding in their house, and the worst of the storm hasn't even arrived yet.
It warmed my heart to hear that this person was told no help was coming today, tomorrow or for days. Can't say you weren't warned. Make sure you write your name and social insurance number on your forearm tough guy. I see a Darwin Award in your future and we want to make sure we getting the spelling right. Surf's up!

Free shelters!
Link: Free shelters
No hotel rooms for 500 miles in any direction. Dogs, cats, pets to take along. Little to no cash. Later power outages, no working gas pumps, atm's. Dozens of other issues.
Remember the "shelter" at the superdome?
It ain't that easy.
As recently as yesterday some counties were offering to bus anyone that still wanted to leave two hours inland to free shelters (with pets if they had them). For free.
I'm sorry but if your survival instinct doesn't kick in even when you're offered a free option to get out of the danger zone you deserve what you get. By the way I've seen exactly zero people so far in all the coverage of the hurricane that fit the description you provided. None.
