Ostensibly, to discuss the latest brewing child sex scandal.
Such great fun! Laughs all around. This, coming just days after the Pope decried the 'Great Accuser' for attacking bishops.
To say that the Church is tone deaf is an insult to tone deaf organizations.

Answer:
Because you hate the Church. How do I know? Because you jump on a clearly opportunistic photo which was inevitable- the initial greetings at the sit down.
So you understand, this meeting was called by the US Catholic bishops to begin an inquire as to why Francis himself took away the punitive actions imposed on McCarrick by Pope Benedict and subsequently put him in the position of one of his top advisors to the US. Francis has called for transparency, yet when he himself was accused of this, he went silent. Those bishops are as pissed off as you are.
Now, if you actually cared about all pedophilia cases, you would be complaining about the source that is the highest both in sheer numbers (by far) and also highest in % (10 fold more per capital cases than the catholic priest scandal) x and that would be the US public schools and its teachers.
I am not defending the guilty priests, but I want every accused to have a trial, and I want ALL pedophilia to end - apparently unlike you, who just want to go after the Catholic Church alone.

It would seem that one cannot criticize the Church before also shedding light on selected other organizations that have engaged in similar misconduct. That is a deflection worthy of the US Bishops Conference. I look forward to them making a similar argument.
If I criticize, I 'hate' the Church. Another masterful leap.
You know what I actually do hate? Little boys being raped by an organization with a decade's long history of denial and obfuscation.
I can understand if you just didn’t know it - then you would equally call them out now. But you don’t.
Criticism of the Church is not the issue, but your SELECTIVE criticism is. It is this very selectivity that reveals your hatred toward the Church, as you continue to ignore (and thus, ironically, facilitate) the largest group of pedophiles ou there. You claim you care about the children being molested, but you say and do nothing about them. You merely keep the limelight on this smaller isolated segment and thereby keep attention away from the greater violator. In some ways, you are a facilitator of the process just like some of the bishops.
Again, I want the Church to answer for this as they should - and in my case, I even want the pope himself to explain. You, however, have a different agenda.
Never excuse the guilty priests and their handlers.
Never excuse ANYONE.

The Church is and should be held accountable.
What is happening elsewhere?
The True and Massive deflection is to suggest
This is primarily a Catholic problem
NO ONE should escape justice.

First, 10-fold per capita? 10 times as many public school teachers per capita have been accused of molestation than priests? Going to need a cite for that.
Second, teachers are surrounded by children all of the time. Priests seriously have little or no business being around children at all. Obviously no abuse is tolerable, but the opportunities for bad teachers are 100-fold per capita greater.
Third, and this is probably most important - do the schools cover it up?
Fourth, what percentage of these 10-fold per capita involve 17-year old children? In other words, older teens that are already sexually active and get involved with a youngish teacher. We all know of stories like that. How many Church sex abuse cases involve a 26 year-old priest and a sexually active 17 year old girl?
