Not looking for “best” or most talented. Looking more for those instantly identifiable and/or who are associated with the group’s “sound”.
Rules:
1. No solo artists
2. No artists in bands that had multiple leads (e.g. Beatles)
3. No artists who’s instruments are better known than their voice (e.g. Hendrix)
4. There must be some longevity to their career or ongoing popularity
My Top 6:
Steven Tyler
John Fogerty
Ozzy Osborne
David Lee Roth
Chrissie Hynde
Jim Morrison
Honorable Mention:
Bon Scott - Iconic, but I’m not sure the sound changed that dramatically with Brian Johnson.

would be the top 4 with Paul McCartney as 5; so you have really one choice if you're doing just 6 singers.
*** even in your rules, you cannot exclude the Beatles because they all created the sound (each a unique sound and Iconic sounds too - every tune of theirs is recognizable from the vocalist alone) which was unmatched in any Rock Band - EVER. ***
I like Fogerty and Chrissie Hynde and Annie Lennox and Ann Wilson and Ray Davies and John Wetton and Greg Lake

...or Steve Marriott. Interchangeable, really.
I had to look up the name, by the way.

Now that I read it, Robert Plant simply has to be on there.
Does Janis Joplin qualify?

Given the criteria laid out.
Would that block Daltry? Again, given the criteria.
I think the exception is for bands like the Beatles, Crosby Stills & Nash, and the Eagles.
The Who's lead singer was Roger Daltrey. Pete Townshend sang only a handful of songs (certainly in their heyday), and even Entwistle sang a couple.

As what they became. My understanding is that Page actually considered being the lead vocalist. I'm not convinced that Plant was a "must have" for LZ. I'm a little biased though.
A decent vocalist would have made them popular all the same. Maybe not the way we know them and think of them but popular just the same.

He is an ICON of RockNRoll. His look, his style, vocals, and his theatrics helped create the mythology of Led Zeppelin and created what a Front Man should look like which was formulated in almost every RNRoll band from then on. He took Daltry's look and style and amplified it. Zep, then considered the "progenitors of Heavy Metal."
Sure you could put someone in his place but then the combination wouldn't have created this, one of the great RNRoll bands ever.
