As a boomer, I vividly recalled the vitriol of political discourse during the cultural wars of the late 60's. Trust me, the hatred on opposing sides was easily as bad as it is today. The boomers absolutely hated the culture of their parents, who, ironically, were the so-called "Greatest Generation." Of course, the latter group had made sacrifices in opposition to the Nazis, but then wanted their sons to go risk their lives in a dubious entanglement in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Oh! And then there was the pill...and the sexual revolution. Today, by contrast, our society is actually flourishing, at least economically... and yet we seem more distressed than ever. The difference seems to be that we can now create our own personal bubbles in which our inputs and outputs are totally filtered to repress any information that disagrees with our opinions. This drives us further and further apart. At least we get diverse perspectives on our beloved UHND Open Board.
