An asylum seeker is a person subjected to racial, ethnic or religious persecution in their home country.
A migrant is looking for a better life. Fleeing bad economic conditions or gang violence makes one a migrant, not an asylum seeker, and it does not qualify one for asylum under international law.

By the way "Trump's case" has nothing to do with the nuance between asylum seekers and migrants.
Regarding the case for a strong border, I don't get your point. Migrants are legally excludable under international law, so that does help his case.
