I recently was in Zahm - that place is a crap hole inside.
It is nothing compared to the days of Grace Hall which had air conditioning, a high story view, and lots of girls hanging around the best looking guys on campus.
I suppose it can’t compare to the communal shower and single bar of soap at Alumni either.
I lived in St. Ed's in 1968-69 and all I can recall are some stained glass windows and a second floor mural depicting a meeting between Father Sorin and the local Native Americans at the founding of the University in 1842. Do those count? Of course the top floor where I resided had to be re-built after a fire in the early 1980's. Maybe they added some amenities then.
Not bad for a small dorm.

It's been unlucky that way.

As in, three years after I graduated, it was gone.
Holy Cross Hall, home of The Hogs.
Sometimes during the winter when hot water was scarce, I would go over to The Rock to shower. Bats flying through the hallways, perpetual plumbing issues, hot as hell in the warm months, open barracks-style showers that were not nearly plentiful enough....
But we loved it, and I wouldn't change a thing.
Pork 'Em Hogs!
That's where students get sent if they get kicked out of their original dormitory. My son's freshman roommate got drunk and thought it would be funny to pour bleach on my son's clothes and bedding (they were Zahmbies). The roommate was sent to Carroll. He was lucky that my son discovered the mischief when there were others around -- if they'd been alone, my son would have crippled him (my son is a 220-pound second degree black belt who fought amateur MMA bouts).
Loved the place, but it was badly in need of an upgrade. The downstairs had 30 residents and a single bathroom with two showers in it, hence the term for the basement residents as "The Dirty Thirty." Had a mouse problem during a stretch in 1995.
Alumni, Zahm, Lyons, Walsh, Dillon, Morrissey, Fisher - all pretty bad.

Though I haven't been through the new ones.
Imagine complaints start going up when people are footing $75 grand a year.

They have upgraded those dorms. They were pretty shitty 35-40 years ago
....I was just passing through and had to compare it to my recollection of exposure to it from back then.
Those kids are really getting the ND Experience in full force.
and the Zahmbies wouldn't have it any other way.
