After a rigorous day of sitting on the sofa watching Netflix it seems I've pulled a muscle in my lower back. I'm crawling around in pain like a new inmate on Oz.
Spare me your thoughts and prayers (for now), do I apply ice or heat? Go.
Advil, two fingers of whisky, ice and some light stretching provided temporary relief. When my saint of a wife came home she got out the oils and gave me a 30 minute, deep massage. I am not worthy.
Can still feel tightness this morning but I'm up on my feet and ready to take on The Ballad of Buster Scruggs today.
Thanks everyone.

and forth on back, feel as if you're stretching your back, repeat.
It sounds like something geriatrics would do that doesn't work. It absolutely works. I had a major pull in my lower back several years ago that I tried treating with laser and electrotherapy at the chiropractor. Nothing helped. Epsom Salt did - get a bag at your grocer, pour a bunch in the tub while filling it with hot water, soak in it.

It worked for Dabo
Also an analgesic to help with inflamation.
That stuff works miracles for some people.
Also, as crazy as it sounds, backs often respond better to exercise than rest. For me, a spell on an elliptical after a couple of days can work wonders.

Good thing you have single payer system.

Apply heat directly on the source of pain. Cold should be applied over a more general area. Also lie flat on your back with a minimal pillow.
And what shall I have Sarah and Amy do while I'm lying flat on my back?

Amy is dressed like Iraq.
I'm oddly aroused.

...but don't start with the wrong one or you're totally fucked.
Backs can be tricky.
If it's a recent injury (sounds like it is), go with ice for 24 hours, then go with heat.
