The suicide rate of football players cannot be ignored.
I read an article that indicated that gloves made things worse in boxing, because head blows were much less likely to break the boxer's hand once gloves were being used. Body blows used to be far more important in boxing (which is why you see old time boxers with their hands down, not up), but gloves made the head blow more common. Same with football helmets: players use their heads as weapon when they are in a helmet, but they are much more likely to tackle with their shoulder and arms if they don't have a helmet.
I don't think you can eliminate brain injuries from football, but you can disincentivize the intentional use of the head as a weapon.
