Actually, that concern for legitimacy in 2022 is part of what prompted the letter from Jerry West,
Nick Saban and others to Joe Manchin regarding Voting Rights (see link)...for instance, if a GOP controlled legislature is able to insert itself into the determination of an election, then we have a problem of legitimacy...there are laws being passed that are designed to accomplish just such an outcome....so, it "Depends" on the degree to which they are successful and sustained by Nov. 2022.
In 2020, we had what has been proven to be, the fairest election, even under trying circumstances (e.g. COVID), we've ever had...every county in the country certified the results...and in places where the tally was contested, hand counting of ballots undeniably justified the results...we actually don't need any adjustments to our voting laws, other than to expand the opportunities to vote, with the same regulations that exist today.
The real "Clean Up" needed is in the GOP aisle.
