I'm sure we've done this before. Hell, I might have even started a thread about it.
I used to stay with Balvenie 10 (which I thought was as good as any other 12), or their 12 (which I thought was as good as many 18's). For a while, I downgraded to Johnny Walker Black, which is a great blend, and as good as many single malts.
I don't drink as much as I used to, and it occurred to me that I could therefore afford a better scotch.Any recommendations for one of the finer scotches?...a step or two up from the two I mentioned? Maybe $100-150 range? I've been thinking of experimenting with some of the smokier/peatier scotches after I had a Lagavulin 16 in a bar a while back.
If ever in St. Louis I highly suggest The Scottish Arms, I believe Cheeks has visited. We have over 100 single malts on the shelf and were voted one of the top 50 whisky bars in the world. The staff will pair the best scotch with every meal and have flights to taste multiple drams. They will also educate on proper ways to drink each scotch. The food is great as well and our sister restaurant The Shaved Duck was featured on food network.

Fortunately, I never inoculated myself from any beers or wines.

As far as I’m concerned Jimmy Buffet can go to hell.

If you want to go expensive, nothing beats JW Blue IMO. Macallan 18 is fantastic too.
To me it’s the gold standard.
Oban is phenomenal as well. Have not had the pleasure of sampling all of these designer ‘distillers editions’, but I’m sure they are tasty.
JW Black is the perfect ‘every day’ scotch.
I am a bourbon drinker, but if I'm in a scotchy mood I go with either of those.
Honorable mention: glendronach and glenfarclas.
