And what should be the goal of our criminal justice system?

I liked having a person in that position who was a little less aggressive on victimless crimes than a typical GOP candidate.
But, I now realize that these liberal DAs are only giving that discretion to non-whites because they are racist. My kids probably won't be given the benefit of the doubt by them because my kids have the wrong skin color. So, I don't vote for them anymore. I don't like racists.
Kidding of course, but it's a funny rationalization for a lawyer that's probably justified by the facts.
I was libertarian, looking at Democrats and Republicans, and living in a state that allowed voting for even judges.
I'd vote Dem for criminal law positions: criminal judges & prosecutors. I felt like the GOP was more likely to go after people selling sex toys and such, which I thought was silly and a waste of government resources. I figured the really bad offenders (thieves and murderers) would get prosecuted and jailed no matter which party was in charge. (I don't think that now, though. Granted, it depends on the candidate.)
I'd vote GOP for fiscal responsibility and positions that affected businesses: legislature positions and civil judges. I felt like the Dems would impose silly and wasteful restrictions on businesses and waste tax money generally. (Now, both parties waste money.)
I'd vote Libertarian when I wanted, especially if it was a race that was calculated to keep the Lib party on the ballot (one candidate in a statewide race would have to get a certain percentage to be on the ballot the following year automatically).
There's also a Jordan Peterson video I need to post on the topic. Summary: society needs conservatives and progressives, and we need them to work together.
Society now is incredibly lost.
Sometimes he can be incredibly partisan. And sometimes he can be quite insightful.

Or does this include everyone who feels Trump’s time has passed… even if I approved most of his policies?

We want our laws enforced, but enforced in a fair and equitable manner - both in terms of charging decisions and punishment.
We have long learned that we cannot punish our way of the crime problem (i.e. mandatory minimum sentences). That doesn't mean that the system should be soft. Quite the contrary. The system needs to be fair, yet proactive -- investing resources upstream vs downstream.
In my experience, the douchebag prosecutors tend to be youngsters who have never faced adversity and/or have never been around the block. They grew up a white comfortable neighborhoods, went to high school, college, and then law school -- yet have never lived or experienced the real world. Hence, their ability to evaluate aggravating/mitigating factors is limited. They often are clueless re factors of race, dysfunction, abuse, and fail to comprehend that offenders' decision-making is often compromised by intellectual/emotional/financial shortcomings.
I do not share the philosophy of announcing that categories of crimes are not going to be prosecuted (putting aside the issue of finite resources and triage). Each case, each offender, -- needs to be prosecuted based upon the individual facts and circumstances.
I am a fan of "out-of-the-box" innovative law enforcement and adjudication -- designed to make communities better, safer and heathier -- yet inspires respect for the law.
It is a difficult task to be a great prosecutor. It is quite easy to be a shitty one.
age has nothing to with it. judges and progresses prosecutors are cut using the same cloth.

They think "rehabilitation" is the ideal goal. This is, of course, idiotic.
The first goal is public safety. Deterrence is second.
