sugar and carbohydrates through sodas, juices, chips, snacks, etc. And, we are in the middle of a huge public health crisis caused by obesity.
I am not interested in debating whether our fattiness as a country has been caused by sugar and carbohydrate consumption. It has. My question as a conservative that I am struggling with is, what is the solution? Do we go the way of Philadelphia's (very imperfect) Soda Tax and tax our way to less consumption? Do we declare a crisis and try to change behavior by education alone? Do we try to change behavior like we did with smoking, by banning sales to youths, banning sales in certain locations, and limiting where you can even do it? (No smoking in a hospital, car with kids in it, bars, restaurants, etc.).
Do we take any action at all?
Since the type of people with unhealthy lifestyles are more often the ones that are probably least able to pay inflated health insurance premiums, we are probably going to have to use another blunt tool to guide behavior. Regulations, regulations, regulations. God bless the government.
