Fake News has contributed greatly to the anger and rage that has built up over many years.
Mass shooting certainly is not caused by single factor. But the media factor is rarely blamed and the media never admit its role in increasing the probability of mass shooting.
Generally say, people are more likely to imitate a model who is similar to themselves. A mass shooter imitates the other mass shooter. The media's 24/7 extensive coverage repeatedly presents the shooter’s image, manifesto, his past life story and the details of the event... This kind of coverage give mass shooter free exposure and can directly influence imitation. I think we have a tradition, an unwritten rule, the media never report gang crime, that is, never give gang criminal public exposure. We need media apply similar, not exact same though, policy to mass shooting.
The media should
1. Stop extensive coverage of mass shooting after a mass shooting event
2. Avoid providing detailed accounts of the actions of a mass shooter before/during/after the event
3. Limit the use of live press events immediately following a mass shooting. Let people in charge of the case focus more on the case.
4. Never use the shooter's name. FBI already has developed the “Don’t Name Them” campaign. The media should join this campaign, should not do the opposite.
5. Not give politicians air time or media space to score political point before memorial of the victims. Politicians should shut up before memorial.
All above applies to domestic mass shooting crimes, not including international terrorism crimes.
