It really depends what you want to do. Personally I would steer clear of PCB and the Destin area, they are too congested although the beaches and water are fantastic. 30A is a great little series of pre planned communities and is famous as you probably see every asshole in the south with a 30A sticker. If you have loads of cash, go for it, but for me with a young family not my scene. If you must stay in Florida I lived in Perdido Key for 3 years on a little island. It was quite and sublime, much less tourism, much less traffic, blue angels fly over your house every tuesday. Downside was limited restaurants and shopping...pensacola is 30 + minutes away and that is where you would have to go shop for most things.
I made the leap and moved to Gulf Shores 4 years ago. Reasons...beaches are great, more restaurants, small town feel, all the shopping we need and a city school system. Plenty of tourist but not as busy as the Destin/PCB area and you can avoid them once you learn where to go and such. Orange Beach is also great, bit smaller than Gulf Shores, but better restaurants and easier access to the beach and bays. I would live in Orange Beach if it were not for the schools...Like I said Gulf Shores broke off from the county school system and it has made a world of difference. The hardest part about the decision was convincing my self living in Alabama would be okay...coming from Seattle you can probably imagine there was a bit of culture shock
Dont even consider MS, beaches suck, really everything sucks except the casinos and the baseball fields.
...from the mouth of the river.
The Alabama beaches are beautiful, but there is more variety in Florida. You can choose between essentially deserted or quite developed or everything in between.
100% recommended. Beautiful beaches, sparse crowds.
Check out Sandestin.
And definitely - definitey - eat the Royal Reds, the best shrimp in the world, only available on the Gulf Coast (not as far as New Orleans). They taste like litte lobsters.

Lots less congested......much better beaches
I will give you Cape San Blas is like that. Not much to do but relax, fish, drink and eat. Pensacola, Sandestin and Panama City are ok.
It's been a few years but we spent lots of time in Cape San Blas. Very cool part of Florida that is all private housing, no hotels. Great fishing but not many restaurants. Great family time spent hanging out on the beach, drinking, playing cornhole and BBQ'ing.
Sandestin is also beautiful but more things to do. They have golf, and a boardwalk type area. Really good restaurants.
We have been looking at Gulf Shores for a vacation and may go this summer. I'm banking Marriott points from work travel to get a week up there. Spent a week in Biloxi last year when there were issues with the water. Nice area with casinos.
Message me here if you want more info. Been in Tampa the past 25 years and cover the south east for work.
good golf in the area, but it was sleeting the day I was there.
and east of Destin/Sandestin....
Very nice area....we have rented a summer beach house there a couple years in a row and it is very nice....some of the nicest beaches in Florida, excellent restaurants, very laid back....
We were considering retiring in Florida for a while so we have seen most of the coast....Naples is nice......Sanibel Island, St Augustine area is nice, Amelia Island on the NE coast of Florida
TampaIrish, what part of Tampa are you in? I was stationed with the Air Force at MacDIll in early 80's and my niece and her family live about 4-5 miles north of the base now in an area undergoing urban renewal
On the other hand if NASCAR is your thing.....................
