Japan has roughly 1/3 the population of the US, and an overall far more concentrated population. The US is reporting over 5,300 deaths. Japan has not shut down their country. It's worth looking in to.
When someone was positive, they tested every person that could have conceivably been in touch with...all positives were immediately identified and quarantined. This prevented asymptomatic people from spreading it, which is likely what happened in the US. At this point, in the US at least, the genie is out of the bottle...we have community spread. We can learn from Japan on how to handle the next one but we are already too late on this one.

I've learned that first hand this week as a coworker tested positive. It has been a major challenge identifying people in contact with that co-worker without giving them too much information so that know who it is.
We will have to see what happens with their numbers over the next week or two.
It seems like Sweden, Mexico, and Japan have taken the route of very little intervention. If things actually turn out to be not so bad in those countries it may be a valuable lesson. On the other hand, it could all go south quickly.

Japan would be a very formidable nation if they didn't stop having kids.
Japan had the nod on facemasks though when I was there last.
one day I found it's stupid, ugly, old-fashioned, not cool. It's when I was 9 or maybe 10. I refused to wear it since then just like most kids did then. But when we're sick, we still wore it.
