At first glance, that is amazing. Rarely can you get better than 90% agreement on anything, but the Dems are in 96% agreement to stay shut down. Truly amazing.
But, when you figure that most Democrats live in urban areas, I guess it makes some sense. But the poll indicates that urbanicity makes it only 2x as likely for a person to want to continue stay at home orders.
Perhaps if they are primarily watching Democrat news. If that is the case, then they are definitely going to be more scared to go outside. That might account for the other 5x difference.

state, hug kiss and do your "normal" thing and the rest of us will just watch and laugh. A side benefit, great reduction in Fat Donald's voters. Good times.
Looks like even a majority of the GOP is against that.
I haven't really changed anything for myself other than becoming a handwashing nazi. I keep a small, pocket sized bottle of sanitizer with me everywhere I go. I work at a hospital and put a mask on to get from the front door of the building to my office and then it comes off. I don't wear them in public (but would if I were coughing or felt sick)... actually, I would just stay home if I were coughing or felt sick. Wearing a mask does nothing for anyone if you are not coughing or sneezing. If you want to help others out, wash your hands often. All of this wearing of masks and gloves for healthy people is a waste of PPE.
the world.
if I’m going to be in an area with a lot of peeps like the grocery store.
There is no panacea for this and a complete return to “normal” is a bit of a pipe dream.
I think Gallup used the word "normal" in its normal sense, so to speak.
Perhaps it’s just how you are phrasing it or the way the question was phrased for the poll but it’s material.
Anyone that wants to return to normal as defined by life before Covid is a moron. Staged reopening where it makes sense is fine. Nuance.
I was careless in my terminology. I implied that "I would return to normal now if restrictions were eliminated" was the same as "we should eliminate restrictions now," and those two things are not the same.
The poll actually asked: "If there were no government restrictions and people were able to decide for themselves about being out in public, how soon would you return to your normal day-to-day activities?"
4% of Dems would return to normal activities now, but 44% of R's would do so.
I should not have tried to paraphrase it, because I failed to do so accurately.
But, I think the data point is still interesting if you ignore my phraseology. Only 4% of Dems would return to normal, but 44% of Republicans would...that is a huge difference in approach, and in letting the virus affect one's lifestyle, just on party affiliation alone.
However one defines “normal.”
No one needs to go to a gym right now, for example.
This isn't something we will all be able to avoid. We will all be exposed. I just want to be exposed when the medical system is ready to go.
Either way, the media will treat this as something that could be stopped, which is irresponsible, I think. It cannot be stopped. I suppose it could turn out to be like smallpox, but it will probably be more like the flu which stays with us no matter what.
that while your overall point of potential inaccuracy could be valid, the marked difference between Democrats and Republicans suggests that a significant difference exists.
I would also like to see this done again with less ambiguous questions, but what I would love to see even more (if it were possible) would be what those numbers would look like in a nonelection year.
You don't go from full lockdown, to a complete end to all social distancing overnight. The correct approach is to ease back in steps and see what happens with case data. The only way anyone would support a "return to normal" today is if they truly believed the virus was a left wing media hoax, which apparently 44% of Republicans do.
That seems like a reasonable viewpoint.
Or, maybe those R's live in communities with no cases.
We don't have dip into the world of crazy conspiracy theories.
was not phased.....which highlights a difference in thinking based on politics. R's trust the government while D's don't because their guy either is or isn't in the Oval Office.
Thus, no matter what, this study highlights the difference in thinking based on politics that was the original point of your post.
That is not the same as "returning to normal"
