It turns out that the State of Michigan had filed a lawsuit against Boyce Hydroelectric Company on April 30th, 2020.
The reason you ask? It turns out that Boyce had decreased the level of Wixom Lake (which is actually a reservoir) down to river level twice in the past two years because they were concerned about the integrity of the Dam at higher levels. Boyce Hydroelectric told the state that it wasn’t making enough money from the electricity generated by the dam to make the necessary repairs, and they were concerned about safety.
In each case, Whitmer’s DEQ (Dept of Environmental Quality) had told Boyce to raise it back up to the higher levels anyways.
The records on the lawsuit filed by the state says that the State was suing Boyce because the the two episodes of draining the reservoir caused the deaths of “thousands if not millions of freshwater mussels, many listed as endangered species”.
Boyce Hydroelectric has released a statement saying that the dam would have been able to handle the rainfall if the lake had been kept down at the river level which Boyce had tried to do twice already but was forced to raise back up by the State.
Witless held a presser today where she danced and said, “the owners of the dam have a long history of problems”, but it is now clear that the priority of the Whitmer Administration was the freshwater mussels, and not the people of Midland.
Her priorities seem to be similar with her shut down. The price for electing her just keeps getting higher.
