The season was shortened by a players strike. The Phillies were last in the NL East and had the worst record in the NL.
Steve Carlton in 1972:
Wins: 27 (led the league)
ERA: 1.97 (led the league)
IP: 346 (led the league)
SO: 210 (led the league)
ERA+: 182 (led the league)
SO/W: 3.56 (led the league)
Complete Games: 30 (!!) (led the league)
He won the Cy Young award. His salary was $65,000.
I challenge you to find a better season by a player playing for an awful team.

24 win team
Mario had 100 points
Won All Star game MVP as a rookie
Won the Calder as NHL ROY
Sidney Crosby's 05/06 rookie season was better than Lemieux's 84/85 rookie season and the 05/06 Pens were a worse team.
22 win team.
102 points (More points than Lemieux at a time when the league scored less goals that the 80s)
7th in scoring (Lemieux was 13th)
-1 vs Lemieux's -33.
3rd team All-Star vs. Lemieux's 7th team All-Star.
In 05/06 the Pens were 34 point out of the playoffs. The 84/85 Pens were only 9 points out of the playoffs.
No cigar for you.
You make a compelling case for Sid, based on stats alone.
I watched them in person.
First game. First shift. First shot.
Mario.

Ovie's pretty good. You should look him up. He doesn't play for the Pens though so you might not have seen him play.
Ovie's rookie season is probably the 2nd best rookie season of all time behind Selanne's. Sid's is defnitely top 5. Mario's might be top 10. Might be.
It wasn't from watching Stanley Cup teams.

I'm a participant, not a spectator.
Playing hockey, coaching it, and living in Toronto must make you an incredible hockey expert. Phenomenal insight because of your elite participation in the sport.
Perhaps you could coach the Leaves to a Stanley Cup.
Cigars for everyone.
I know a little bit about technique, power, leverage and the mental chess of high speed competition.
But I lack your arrogance.
My fatal flaw in inane arguments.

And don't get me wrong, i love Steve Carlton. Perhaps you were only referring to baseball in which case, I'm sorry.
1990 and 1996 - he was incredible and the team was awful.
That said, you could easily make the argument that he kept numerous horrible teams from being horrible instead of in the mediocre/average range. The same is true of Peyton Manning: The Colts were 12-4, 14-2, 10-6, and then Manning couldn't play in 2011: They went 2-14. Perhaps his performance was frequently just superb within an otherwise dreadful team.

Andre Ware is extremely underrated as a 1st-Round bust. Great guy and all, but was never even good enough to unseat Rodney freaking Peete. And Scott Mitchell was Scott Mitchell.
