I ask because the right has always accused the left of wanting activist judges. Was Garland, Sotomayor and Kagan radical liberals?

A major concern many conservatives have with Kagan is that she's got a history of some pro-union/pro-organized labor rulings. With Garland, he appeared to be quite moderate, but there were a lot of concerns about his take on the 2nd Amendment. I have not personally looked up many details about his rulings, other than he seemed to be largely pro-police and pro-prosecution.
For Conservatives, I think the judges are often important because there's a general fear of government creep into personal freedoms, and the Supreme Court is the last place to stop it. 2A infringements, race-related entitlements that are discriminatory in their attempts to "re-distribute" cultural representation across industries, squashing of the guarantee of religious freedom, etc.
And, to Chris's point, there is no doubt that there plenty who want to see Roe/Wade overturned.

If RvW is overturned, they will take over the top position, though.
Kagan worked for Bill Clinton's staff and managed his policy on the veto of the Partial Birth Abortion ban law from congress. She was a strong activist for Planned Parenthood activities, and she was rewarded with a SCOTUS nomination without ever being an actual judge before.
She was a hard left legal academician.
Soto is the most liberal voter on the SCOTUS right now.
He knew her and was impressed with her legal intellect. He wanted smart people to “argue” with.
I don’t think he had the same opinion of Sotomayor.
Kagan was the first person put on the Court without having been a judge since Rehnquist was initially nominated by Nixon.
most intellectual court member of the last century.

Perhaps you were asking honest questions, and had no intention of taking sides.
A. I'm not a right winger
B. I don't live my life wondering why others don't strictly apply the constitution to all phases of life
C. SCOTUS has no impact on my day to day life
Therefore I asked the question to those who could shed light why this is such a big deal to them. IMO, no jurist wants to repeal current laws. It's a slippery slope they don't want their name affixed to. The right tries to scare their voters into thinking the big bad liberals are going to take all of their guns away, kill all of their babies, etc.
