Even if we don’t know whether it works, or how effectively, when did we become so whiny and pussified that we won’t wear one even if there is only a chance that they save lives? Is it that big of a sacrifice for those who wrap the flag around themselves? Aren’t we supposed to be patriotic and work for the common good, or is it all just about yourself and your Rahts when civic sacrifice is called upon?

1) If masks can be mandated, why not face shields and full hazmat suits? Where does it end?
2) Suppose there is a large-scale movement that says 40,000 people dying of flu every year is unacceptable and that masks should be worn for 6 months during flu season from now on?
3) What is the cutoff point for how many deaths are acceptable so that masks aren't deemed necessary, and who gets to make that decision and how is it determined?
1) The HAZMAT reference was hyperbole for effect, I know, but the infectious disease folks (who do this as their life's work every single day) adjudge that mask wearing is a basic and essential mitigation step...they're available to everyone at very little cost and the "intrusion factor" (my term) is minimal...face shields obviously help and are welcomed, but problematic when it comes to "mandating".
2) I'm guessing you posted that 40K deaths figure because you know that's right in the range for yearly 'Seasonal Flu' fatalities, per the CDC...and you raise a fair question...it's a judgement call, for sure, as to how we view and react to health issues. In our COVID-19 case, the infection rate and virulence level is literally overwhelming hospitals right mow...to the best of my knowledge this has never happened with Seasonal Flu, plus the death toll is rising sharply to a current total around 230,000, with three more months to go for an annual measure. BTW, in my travels to the Far East it was not at all uncommon to see random citizens walking around all times of the year with masks on, so other societies don't find mask wearing to be an "imposition".
3) That's an even better question, and one that we'll all be anxious to know once the vaccine(s) get here. It's possible that the Seasonal Flu example could be a guide, but in any event, since non of us quite understand the micro-biology or epidemiology of this pathogen, we'll just have to wait and find out. Fortunately, even our most knowledgable pros are optimistic about "normalcy" in 2021.
P.S. The link is not so much for you, as we've already discussed "R0", etc...it's for others who might stumble upon this post.

Andrew Cuomo - wear one, it saves lives. He is then caught outside without one like it's no big deal.
Diane Feinstein getting off a plane without one on.
Chris Cuomo - same as his dumbass brother.
Multiple members of Dem congress preaching about it and then pictures of them without them in a close meeting.
You have to wear on to walk into a restaurant but sitting down you don't? Stand at a bar, mask on, sit, don't need one? Really?
This isn't counting the idiots who threw around the Super Spreader term only to overlook all the riots and peaceful protests. I don't wear one outside. I social distance when I can. I have been to Disney with my kids and put one on because I wasn't going to miss a weekend with them. Work travel has been extremely limited because my company has restrictions on us. They sent us company logo masks to wear if we need them. I haven't needed them yet.
Now we have sports being played where we have coaches kind of wearing them and kind of not. My daughter has been down to tourneys on weekends when she has been home and no mask was to be seen. In my eyes, it's about choice. I know the risk and I am willing to take it. Hell, I'll sign a waiver if need be.
an "asymptomatic" carrier of COVID and passing it on to others who could actually die from the disease. There is literally no medical professional who doubts that scenario...so the reasonable response for a caring fellow citizen is to wear a mask, keep social distancing, wash your hands frequently and finally...get the vaccine when it is approved and distributed.
Meanwhile, ease your stress by spending time on the golf course where there's no enclosure and social distancing is very easy (at least with the shot spreads of our foresome).

And I know a lot of stupid people.

There are more than a few up this way, so you are certainly not alone.
watch her, you bet your ass I will. Hell, I'll even buy the school one she wears on campus. But if given the choice, I will be away from everyone down one of the lines watching without one on.
In a way that is the point of the masks and SD; to keep us limping along economically and socially without more shutdowns until there is a vaccine.
Know a fair number of Trump voters and a couple rabid Trump supporters...all wear masks.
felt the need. They didn't experience the cases we saw in the lower metropolitan areas last spring. They are also stubbornly independent, which I admire. Right now they are getting hammered, hopefully they will recognize the importance.
Not like anyone had these laying around.

And some people live a fair distance from a Walmart.
Your right about access to masks back in the spring. But they are everywhere now. It's not access in rural communities in MIchigan. It is an attitude of don't tell me what to do. That attitude makes them strong and helps them endure some tough shit. It can also work against them. Right now rural hospitals are trying to pawn off their Covid patients because they are running out of room. Problem is the other hospitals are full too.

Read this and you'll realize what predicament they are in. The fact that they haven't bought into wearing masks or social distancing is on them and the CinC that discouraged the use.

They are everywhere (shops, restaurants, public transport) and just go about their lives like always. Hell, this summer there were outdoor concerts, parties, etc. all over the place and none of the youngins wore masks.
Despite what the Left seems to think about how we or Trump have done, it's worse over there.

Are they against mandating it? Most of them are, but they still wear one. But I don't think many wear them outside unless asked or mandated.
I coach my daughter's CYO soccer team and the league mandated that all spectators wear masks. Almost none of the parents wore one because it is outdoors and people aren't forced to stand close to anyone. When CYO threatened to cancel the season because their "observers" reported people weren't wearing masks, everyone started wearing one. And they didn't complain.
My other daughter plays HS soccer and the rules are that only family are permitted at games and they have to be masked. You need to have a mask on to enter the stadium. There is 100% compliance in the stands once people are in.
I would say that 80% of both of these groups are pretty hard core conservatives.
to have some catchy phrase on their face. It is the easiest thing to do but we cannot get it done. Just make a mask that says Roll Tide or War Damn Eagle and you can get across what you were going to say to me anyway without the effort of opening your mouth...win win

Never had an issue with wearing a mask. Never had an issue distancing and isolating the best I can. Not an issue that they've asked us again to continue the practice in Oregon. I'll get vaccinated when that's available too.
But I agree with you. Never understood digging your heels in over this...
So, no, I guess I cannot explain why someone is the way you describe. Perhaps they are on the extreme political end of those who support Trump.
