....you made the point that if the law were written to expect safety protocols be followed in Churches just as elsewhere, then this whole issue could have been avoided and everyone could agree.
I agree with you, but really that misses the whole point of this case for the Left.
The Catholic Churches (and synagogues) targets WERE ALREADY FOLLOWING THOSE RULES. I have no idea how many here attend church here, but thise rules are already being followed in spades. The diocese across the country have been very careful about distancing, masks, etc..
The reason that the law was not written in the reasonable way that you suggested is because it would not accomplish the goal of the Left in this case. COVID prevention is not the heart of this issue, or they would have applied the same rules evenly. If it were written as you suggest, there would not even be any disagreement on the religious worshippers side. The goal Of this move was to restrict the open worship of God in our country. At first under an unusual circumstance, and with time, expanding it.
I mean, these guys don't seem to be following any sort of guidelines. They would certainly benefit from some rules, although I doubt they would adhere to ANY rule.
I agree that the vast majority of churches were using common sense, though.
of NYC who were showing good sense.
There is no other explanation for this, and thank goodness for Trump's SCOTUS appointees. It is unbelievable that 4 justices voted to suspend the First Amendment, and further, they did it for churches following the rules rather than liquor stores and lawyers.
I'll just assume the picture is legitimately from the COVID shut down period though you provided no date.
I could show you a few football games where the crowds did worse and are still being allowed to aggregate.
7,000 people there, allegedly.
The problem was the "apparent" failure to "enforce" the public safety rules across the board. Roberts felt that the rules as written they ok... but the truth is that in reality they were being enforced in a discriminatory manner..

because nobody was currently in the "red" zone. Seemed like a way to avoid any decision at this time.
