A Republican bill that's approved by 60% of the House Democrats and 32% of the House Republicans?

The fact is that both sides were absolutely deplorable.

and maybe I am missing your point, but 40% of the no votes were Dems. This is definitely one of the few times I think were large parts of both sides of the aisle see this bill as going way too fast. The fact that so many Dems didnt vote for this does surprise me though. Makes me wonder if some dems behind the scenes dont really trust Barney Frank, seeing that he deserves a chunk of the blame for this disaster, along with many others no doubt.

The majority leader gets 60% of her party to support the opposing party's bill, while the minority leader fails to get 67% of his party to support his own party's bill. Who's the abysmal failure in this scenario again?

I find Pelosi almost obscenely unlikable, but this isn't her screwup.

Both parties are now negotiating vote trading, with the Democrats arguing the Republicans should get at least 9 more of their members to vote 'Yea,' bringing the Republican favorable votes up to signficiantly. At issue...how many seats each party should put at risk by voting for this deeply unpopular bailout.

On Thursday after crafting the initial Dem bill to counter Paulson's proposal, with out bring any Republicans to table she announces that she has a bipartisan solution. Everything I've read indicates there may be better ideas out there. But I refuse to believe there is absolutely nothing the government can do to mitigate the damage this is doing to the economy. There are other ways of raising the money, maybe partially subsidized with taxes, but we haven't heard anything from Congress outside of this $700B bill.

was the flavor of the market. Reagan's ideology of deregulation has come home to roost, known as Reaganomics, or Friedmanite thinking.

The handouts were okay when Reagan made it easier for handouts to the wealthy. Inflation stayed the course which is what it was supposed to defeat along with government spending which increased along with the size of government. It was to put a rein on money movement but it turbocharged it. These things looked good because bank accounts blossomed but we ignored they blossomed along with inflation.

I totally blame all other subsequent White House inhibitors for their love of making money on a faulty idea.

I think many people see this as Paulson and Bernacke helping their boys on Wall Street more than anything else. I would be suspicious of it and I am glad to see that both Republicans and Democrats are having 2nd thoughts on this bailout.

Make no mistake - if this bill fails, the lemmings will all follow each other over the cliff.

The only thing preventing panic right now is the potential help from the federal government.

I trust the fed chair. People in his position are not generally inclined to be chicken littles.

to a certain extent, but I have a hard time trusting someone who allowed this to happen, and that included Bush, Pelosi, Frank, Dodd, Bernacke and Paulson. It is reaking havoc in our financial systems, and while we need to stop that, when do we finally get to a point where we start putting in politicians that are going to do things the right way, not the way that gets them re-elected. I feel that this bailout will only lead to the same kinds of reckless attitudes that got us here in the first place. When do we start putting these CEO's in jail for this BS.

Bailout or no, this uncertainty of direction is wreaking havoc on the markets and the economy.

I'm reminded of Martin Landau's advice to Richard Gere in Intersection, "Whatever you're going to do, do it."
