And if not... how did evolution cause this to happen with humans?
And how can it possibly be genetic when this "trait" can't be passed on by those who cannot reproduce?
And ultimately, how come we don't even ask such common sense questions?

They know sex is purely biological. But they introduce a word that previously only applied to language. Romance language words often have gender, but the don't have sex. Animals have sex, but not gender. But they started pushing to change the word on forms from "sex" to "gender" 30 years ago to make room for this human construct of heretofore non-existent sex classifications. Total political nonsense, and anti-science, but there you go. The radicals on the left will do anything to warp tradition for political benefit, and the sheep on the left just accept it as reasonable without questioning what they are told...and then, having gotten their marching orders, they start attacking people who didn't get those marching orders, calling them "bigots" in order to prompt the societal change their radical overlords desire.

When you can make it complicated…
Worth noting that sea horse males carry the pregnancy (eggs), but there isn't any nurturing going on.
But this is a societal question I think, not a biological nor scientific one. If society decides this is something we want to tolerate and/or encourage, then we will and detractors will suffer consequences, just like has always been the case. Society has never been purely science or data based, far more often based on religion/dogma.
You are right, though. As a society, we will decide whether (1) we treat mental illness, or (2) force people without mental illness to pretend that reality is not real and that another person's misperception of reality is real.
I'm uncomfortable with calling it a mental illness. I mean, a person can be hypnotized into thinking they are a cat and such ...
I'm willing to discuss terms, I guess? On the other hand, I think it is time to call it what it is. There are many mental illnesses which are just like the incorrectly perceived sexual identity. People misperceive reality in many different ways, and that is usually called mental illness.
I'm not trying to be mean. In fact, I argue that pretending it is not mental illness, and encouraging it, and forcing people who don't have it to pretend it is real...that is being mean, to both the ill and the healthy.

Did Turing think he was a woman in a man's body?
Or, was he merely a man who received physical gratification from sex acts with men?
I thought he was the latter, not the former. We are talking about the former. If he was the former, and I just didn't know, I will await the point you seek to make.
Or did he just want to have sex with men?

That's a discussion for another thread.
If you wake up and you think you're a woman. All evidence to the contrary, and demand at the point of a gun everyone agree with your false belief you're a woman, that's mental illness.
Carl Jung had a few thoughts that I think about in this:
"The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely."
"People cannot stand too much Reality."
And if I accept your argument that it is "mental illness", then what? What would be the desired reality for me? What should I properly think and feel about it, err these humans?

They probably watched The VIew
The whole LGBTQ+ nonsense is pervasive now and in your face. Someone gets the slightest inkling that they might be "different" and all of the sudden they're "transitioning" or some such bullshit. Plus, it is very, very fashionable nowadays to be Queer. Kids see it everywhere. Hell, you cannot turn on the TV and see a commercial with a bunch of fairies mincing around. These kids have absolutely no conception of these things until an adult introduces them to it. Thus, the reaction to the Parents Right in Education bill in FLA and other states. They need to be able to groom these kids and the sooner the better...

We humans have this thing called "self-awareness."
Or some of us do.
(no message)
And there are other higher primates who exhibit self awareness.
But what good is self awareness if you are totally wrong about something fundamental about yourself.
I am guessing not.

We’re the only animal aware of its mortality, ive heard it said.
I wouldn't be surprised by other examples in nature: Dolphins, Orcas, Pigs, Octopi, Ravens, Parrots, great apes etc.

Seriously though, the frogs that do this undergo a natural gender transformation and never behave as a female while phenotypically male or vice versa.
