Everyone in East Ukraine speaks both languages. They also love Russians. It's Putin they detest.
Russian and Ukrainian are as similar as Portuguese and Spanish... and speakers can communicate.

Your counterargument seems to be that it is ok to deprive her right of speaking Russian since she has another language to speak. Just like Cuba being hostile to US for USSR bloc. You can say this is their choice, they fight for their choice. But reality is you can't do that. This is called balance of powers, political science 101.
In history no small countries being hostile to it's powerful neighbor can be peaceful. Just ask Cuba, they are hostile to US, but never intended to invade US and never oppressed Americans in Cuba (because they all were gone), but US still impose embargo to this island for over 50 years. You just can't be hostile to your big neighbor. You at least should stay neutral if you don't want to be freindly.
