It's a gas station restaurant.
Certainly not the best BBQ in Texas...but still decent, and I'd wager it beats Iowa BBQ...no offense.
Regional obfuscated assessments of BBQ is a silly pursuit. The quality of the meat, ingredients of the rub and the flavor of the (optional) sauce are paramount. I've had shitty BBQ in many places known for it and excellent in places not known for it. Perhaps the best I ever had was at a mom and pop hole in the wall diner on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border.
Will there be great places everywhere? Of course. But when I'm talking about a region (Texas vs other states) I guess I'm talking about how the average places measure up against each other. I do think this is something Texas does, on average, better than most. In my experience, it is more common in the Midwest for restaurants to rely on hotter temperatures and shorter cook times...and rely on sauce to cover up the faults of the cooking process. If you are willing to say that sauce is optional, then you probably have found a decent place.
I also think Texas (and, frankly, southern California) does Texmex far better than most states. In the Midwest, I do have an easier time finding good BBQ than I do finding good Texmex.
All of this is highly subjective, of course.
are pretty good against most places in the country. The best of the best are world class.
Next time I'm there, I'll check out the BBQ...but, I'm likely to be in Nashville several times before I stop off in Memphis.
