More maturity than some of the parents sitting in the stands.

Too many times the coaches are biased though also. I agree parents can be horrid but coaches tend

to favor teachers' kids and fathers' kids that they know. Very human reaction but very unfair. Sadly, too many coaches go for the pretty girls which is very sick.

Correction: "than most parents in the stands." It's unbelievable these days.

kids started to get noticed in recruiting, they lose their damn minds. We would tell them before every Showcase - do not approach the college coaches, you're not allowed to talk to them. There were always 1-2 who would find their way over and chat them up. Nothing like getting their kid written off because the parent was an asshole. College coaches asking me about a set of parents and which player was theirs so she didn't waste her time on her. It's really sad.

I'm fortunate. I coach middle school and no parents complained about their kids not getting equal...

minutes. It shouldn't be a big deal to anyone. I try to give a lot of minutes to all the kids, but the kids seem to understand, as my generation did, that not everyone is equal in ability. Every kid wants to win, and sometimes that means that the best players will play more. It's a valuable lesson that teaches some humility and that being a teammate is more than just how many points you score.

I'm lucky. I'm in a rural area with cultural norms that generally reinforce politeness. Having been at a much bigger school, I know how it is most places and that I am in an exception.

If your child is a college prospect, I don't have a problem with traveling teams/AAU and the like. The problem is that we have parents dropping $10K plus to travel around the region, transporting kids who overwhelmingly are not D1 or D2 material by a longshot. The parents are delusional. For the vast majority, their kids' sports careers end when they graduate high school. The time and money spent gallivanting around the Midwest is foolish and their kids could be doing other things during these periods.

Pitching lessons over the summer so that helps. The best part is I don’t have to put out $40 for a half hour anymore. Trust me, we have spent thousands on travel ball. The best was an 18 day road trip through Atlanta into TN and finishing in VA. 2 showcases and ASA Nationals. I love my wife and kids but damn I was glad to see that trip end.

Stories about travel and High School ball.
My neighbors daughter played at ND and she was pretty damn good, started 3 years and her mom was one of those Krazies.

What we tried to do. But of course it all depends on who is playing when the coaches showed up. If we had to do it over again, we would stay away from Showcases and have her concentrate on on campus camps for the colleges she was interested in. Focus there and communication with the coaches. Showcases are money grabs.

I once was a LL board member, manager of 10-12 yr olds, and all star manager.

It's worse behind the scenes than anyone can imagine. My local Pop Warner was no better . I was a HC, coaches rep, and board member there too. Parents. Adults. Fathers. Mothers. Some cases grandparents. What can I say? Travel ball, not much better. Only a lot more expensive. Very few were in it for the kids.
