"Recruiting experience wont be much of a factor in the decisionBrey believes it can be overrated. Brey was a high school coach at the time Dukes Mike Krzyzewski gave him his first job in college basketball. Success on the recruiting trail, Brey said, comes down to personality, and he said his candidates fit that mold."
There you have it in his own words. Yet more proof, as if any more were needed, of why Brey has run a mediocre program for the great bulk of 17 years. His candidates, by the way, are reportedly all former players. It would never occur to him to hire an outstanding assistant from another program who actually proved he could be a successful D-1 Ass't BB coach. But then, after seeing how all of Brey's former assistants have failed in their head coaching jobs, maybe a hot shot assistant wouldn't come.
Brey sucks!

One of the dumbest things he has ever said.
Brey is not going to be able to hire an ace recruiter from a high D-1 program. The salary is not there. I don't know how you guys don't understand that.
Ryan Humphery has a tremendous personality, has worked a couple years under an outstanding young coach and was himself a top 10 recruit who understands the process. I have no doubt he will connect with recruits. This whining about Brey going back to former players as assistants is dumb. He has a whole stable of smart guys who are getting started in the business. Why not mine that resource? Frankly, I'd like to see him give Tory Jackson a call. He's got a personality like Humphery and he can also help make inroads into Michigan, which produces a lot of talent.
If Brey doesn't go with an ex-ND player, it will not be some bigger-name assistant. They aren't going to come for less money to live in South Bend.
