1. Smart is from Milwaukee.
2. Basketball is the premier sport, by far, at Marquette.
3. There is much more recruiting latitude at Marquette.
4. Marquette pays him almost three times what ND pays Brey.
5. Much more devoted fan base at Marquette.
Now, you tell me why he would leave that for ND.
Why would Shaka Smart leave Marquette for ND? Why? Billy Donovan is not coming here. Monty Williams is not coming here and he doesn't really like ND all that much. Chris Quinn wants to be an NBA coach and he's never been a head coach. Porter Moser has a mediocre team at Oklahoma and has a huge buyout. Loyola of Chicago is also a far cry from the ACC. John Beilien is older than Brey and has undoubtedly turned down better offers to coach the college game again. Martin Ingelsby has been mediocre at Delaware.
A realistic, top drawer candidate would be Steve Pikiell of Rutgers. He's a helluva coach and gets after it on the recruiting trail, too. It would essentially be a lateral move, at best, but maybe ND could pry open the pocketbook a little more and maybe Pikiell would like the challenge of the ACC?
If ND can't attract a big conference coach who has successfully revived a program, then I hope it goes with a rising mid-major coach. There are good ones out there.

You also think Ingelsby is a good candidate. What has he done?

I would be most shaka'd if I were proven wrong.
