Considering many Notre Dame fans (self included) would not have been upset if Fleck had been named head coach back in December it's kinda ballsy inviting him to campus for the coaches clinic. Well either that or just not smart to let Jack get an up close look at him.
These clinics are the norm now. It seems people don't keep there strategy, planning and tactics as close to the vest as they did 10/20 years ago.
It would be more alarming if he was inviting direct competitors in to chit-chat on strategy and game planning. However, I think I remember something of the sort happening after OSU or ALA kicked our tail. A few months later we invited one of them in for game discussions. I may be incorrect, but I feel like I read that somewhere.
Why would you not invite some of the latest and greatest minds in to pick their brain? Especially, if they're not competition?
Whether or not you agree Fleck is a valid potential candidate some day, it's very interesting that Kelly asked him to come to the coaches clinic.
But I suppose if you define a lot as a little more than a handful, I guess you might be right.
Row the boat.
After all, you two MUST be thisclose.
; P )
If Fleck is any good, Kelly can pick his brains.
As for your fetish for Fleck, there was no chance FLeck was going to leap from WMU to ND. He made a smart move and picked a placed with low visibility and expectations and he can learn to coach in a real league on a week in week out basis.
Then, if he proves to be worth your worship, he will be ready to be the head coach at ND.
If Kelly doesn't get this turned around quick, Fleck's name will be at the top of the list - especially if he has success at Minnesota. Notre Dame does have some good luck hiring coaches who've been HC's at Minnesota.
That is still a ballsy thing to do.
Fleck will have no impact, now or later, on whether Kelly keeps his job.
I admit that he might become ready for the ND job after 3 years in Minnesota. Using the word 'likely' borders on the absurd.
But I also think there are probably 10 coaches that might be potential replacements and are just as 'likely' as Fleck.
The college coaching world is full of 'hot' coaching prospects who flamed out when they move to bigger stages.
We have two in our rear view mirror.
