...the extension based on his positive perception of 2015...and Kelly promptly spit the bit...

Because I could see someone who just looks at where Notre Dame is nationally in all the defensive categories in 2015 and thinking the guy was doing a good enough job.
At the end of 2015 Notre Dame was 45th in total defense, 26th in pass defense, 72nd in run defense (ouch), and 39th in scoring.
I could see Kelly selling the "third year in the program" crap, if Swarbrick even brought up VanGorder at all.
Plus, they were just 10-3 and were a pre-season top 10 team.
I think a lot of people saw what could be coming, and didn't like him, but there wasn't a huge clamoring for him to be fired.

In fact, that 30 seconds could very well have been the turning point of the program.
It's not one game or one series or whatever.
This guy was given a top 5 talent and all he got out of him was one sack and nine tackles for loss. Notre Dame wasn't going to recruit a better player. If you can't maximize that guy then what are you getting out of Tillery? Or Redfield. Or any of them who aren't an all world talent.
And it's not Swarbricks job to see that, it's Kelly's.

15 yards. Twenty yard loss in field position and a first down on 3rd down I believe. The defensive lineman got the QBs head, though it was as much bad luck as dumb.

Love the way a lot of people jumped onto the "Fire BVG" bandwagon just before it happened. They forget that he had a dynamic defense the first year up til the time Joe Schmidt got hurt for the season and Morgan had to take over for him. The defense immediately went down and everybody blamed the loss of JS and lack of experience. His second year, we lost half the defense to injury. Jarron Jones, Russell, et al. Again, all we had to do was hang on for 30 seconds against Stanford and we would have probably been in the playoffs. Then last years disaster. Don't disagree with his firing and maybe it was too complicated, but it didn't help that we lost 14 guys including Jaylon to the NFL and all four returning defensive backs in addition. While BK may have had an inkling that he needed to change DC's, it would have been hard to fire a close friend based on the first two years. I also think BK was counting on BVG to simplify his scheme which he never did.
Bloom came off the rose pretty quickly for me. Definitely wanted him gone during the 2015 season and most certainly at the end of it.
For whatever reason Kelly felt married to him, he should have been smart enough to cut the chord on his own...sooner.
It was obvious before his last year

not that there is anything wrong with him finishing his career as a Defensive Analyst.

August 19 2014, BVGs first media day? Hmmm.
