I don't know if it was the deciding factor or not, but I think that the extension and contract buy-out provisions recently signed by Kelly clearly played a part in Swarbrick retaining Kelly. Remember that ND was in the final stages of finally pay off Charlie. I don't think ND had the stomach to start paying another guy not to coach Notre Dame.
as I recall, he said that when they made their evaluation after the season and decided to go forward with Kelly bringing in new staff on 3-year contracts it was not a short term decision. That would be your answer. I very much doubt there will be any "hot seat" culture at ND as long as Swarbrick is in charge.
Fuck Jack Swarbrick. He is a vile, immoral, snake. I realized that the day he held the press conference after Declan's death.

He would do well in a 'pass happy' environment such as the Big12
Unless Kelly has 12 wins in '17 and '18, his 'voluntary' departure won't be viewed as a loss for ND.

Jack Swarbrick is an asshole.
talent smartly and plays with proper judgement as to when to be creative and when to play controlled.

I was flippantly predicting how a 6-6 season would be spun by Jack "off" Swarbrick.
that they have put a stake through the heart of the golden goose. That (another lousy season) is not something I hope for or even expect given the talent they have to work with, but if the changes in staff made for the 2017 season do not bear fruit then a total reboot (and another M$15 buyout) will be the only hope. The way they are pathetically hawking season tickets should be enough to get their attention. If not, I am convinced they will simply join the ACC in football and try toi be a competitor to Duke and Wake Forest. And perhaps this year they finally give up the pretext of sellout crowds.
I'd much rather see them have a great year so Brian Kelly will take a position somewhere else. I cannot ignore the fact that the man does not want to be at Notre Dame. He essentially "phoned it in last year" and the results showed on the field. What concerns me is another 7-5 or 8-4 season which would keep him around even longer. It is a win/win for Notre Dame if they can conjure up an 11-1 or 10-2 season. That may attract the likes of NFL teams attempting to poach Kelly. In that case, ND is off the hook for the buyout. However, I just cannot see how this squad can put together a record such as that.
