Not to knock him but those to have talent that you can't miss. He may have it but It's not been visible and he's had what seems to be more carries than either. At least until the MSU game.
Curious on the thoughts of how he basically is #2 RB and Williams and McIntosh were 3 and 4.
so far...
receiver too. At least that is what was said for the past six months. Next year even if Adams leaves, we should be in great shape.

if dexter can learn to pass block he will see the field more, or if the offense line gets better where we don't have to have a back in every play to pass black, he will see the field more. As fast as he is, still can't run through tackles like Adams
You are right there. Adams runs through tackles very well. He did again against Michigan State. I also know in 2015 Kelly made the comment that Adams was ready to play as a freshman because he was such a good blocker.
All I know is what I have read from observers of him in practice, and the reports are that he is a damn good back. The coaches must think so, since they placed him #2 in the pecking order behind Adams.
I am certainly not ready to bury the kid. He really has had no game chances to impress anyone. Let's at least give the kid some extensive game action before saying he should be behind Williams and McIntosh.

Slow down a bit. That being said, he has 7 more carries on the season than Jones.
What was special at all about him?

he got meaningful carries in the 3rd qtr and looked good. He's not going to unseat those ahead of him, but the young man has ability and looked good until it was garbage time and MSU put everyone in the box.
The kid showed real ability when he was in at the time ND was running its full offense. He also has home run ability, as he is one of the fastest players on the roster. I think the coaches hoped he could be another Will Fuller and started him off as a wide receiver to take advantage of his "take the top off the defense speed" as Kelly likes to say. But that plan was shelved as he either did not catch the ball well or had no feel for the wide receiver position.
to the role Darrin Sproles used to play.

just a question? In comparing the 3 backs, what would be the board's opinion of why you would or wouldn't put them in the pecking order that seems they've been placed in?
I know these types of questions are foreign to this board, but thought I'd try. You can have discussion around players varying talents without bashing.
It’s easy for us to rank these guys based on watching them run the ball on Saturdays. But that’s just one facet of the job, and even that is a small sample at this point I like Dexter. I thought McIntosh looked solid. But I’m not concluding Jones is a lesser overall back after four games. And I’m not accepting that he didn’t deserve the accolades he was getting from his coaches.
That is the most dumbfounded response for not playing a RB.
Absolutely foolish...
But pass protection is part of being a running back. Like it or not.

If you have a RB that only plays on running plays, it kind of tips your hand for the defense. It's like a WR not playing when he doesn't block downfield. It's easy for a fan to say "who cares?" To a coach, it is important. I like McIntosh. I'm just saying there may be legitimate reasons for Jones getting the nod on the depth chart that aren't obvious from just watching the games on Saturday.

it were as balanced between Adams and Williams as it was againts MSU. Then sprinkle in small amounts of McIntosh and Jones. That would be hard to stop.
I think Dexter finds open spaces really well but he is not super fast and does not pull out of tackles like Adams does. He definitely has his place on the field at times though, especially when a defense is tired because he certainly has the right stuff when there is adequate blocking. The touchdown reception he made to me, was one of his best plays, between focusing on the ball and keeping his one foot in bounds.
