Now with Coney deciding to stay can he get some praise for that? I mean it only seems fair that everytime somebody decides to leave, people bash him to no end and refer to the program as a sinking ship, kelly cant do this or that, or nobody wants to be around him. But now that he talked him into staying, which for the record he does every year with a handful of kids who could go pro, why not give him credit for that? Or is this only a "i want to hate him" kind of thing. For as much as nobody wants to be around him, amazingly, i don't recall a single coach or player saying anything bad about him or the program after they were gone, with the exception of Malik (who is someone who obviously thought more of his talent than anyone at either ND or Florida). You would think, in this world where everyones opinion is apparently warranted, there would be at least a handful of players slamming him? And if you look it, every coach that left, with the exception of Elko, made moves that were hard to argue with. And for all the players that left, whether it be to transfer or go to the NFL, was generally the right choice. There are a handful of guys, maybe 1 every year or two, where your like, nah i don't think he should have gone (i.e. EQ this year). But generally its hard to argue with the decisions. And for the record, every major program has kids and coaches leave every year, we just don't hear about it because we don't follow the team. In fact, you NEED some people to transfer to make room for the new people. And putting kids into the NFL as juniors, is actually a good thing because it brings recognition to the program.
So if this is such a crappy ship, where is the outrage from the players and coaches? Or is just the fans who think ND should be undefeated every year and if their not, well it must be the coaches fault?
Anyway, nice job Kelly and staff for bringing these kids back.
His job is to win them.

Kelly is certainly a well-respected coach and, very good recruiter. The problem is he cannot beat a good top 10 team and, the recent, high profile tv games have been nothing short of an embarrassment. So if you are happy with 9-3 seasons, no wins over top 10 teams and second-rate bowl games, he is your man. However, I am not sure that will maintain the lucrative NBC tv contract or pack 80,000 fans in year after year in that great stadium. At some point, people will figure out this program is no longer elite.
You are making too much sense...

he has lost every BIG game he has played in in 8 years at ND. National Championship embarrassment. Fiesta Bowl beatdown. And for the last 4 years he has lost key games in November to put ND out of the CFP talk.
There have been some good wins no doubt. He has recruited well. ND has put guys in the NFL. That's great!
At what point do you hold him responsible and say "Put it all together and win it all!" Just once. It's been 8 years. He has had a shot at the title. Kudos! But we were embarrassed in that loss. He had a shot at the BCS win in the Fiesta Bowl. Kudos! But we were blown out in that game. 2 of 4 past seasons saw ND in the top 4 CFP rankings. Kudos! But we collapsed in November of those seasons putting us out of the running. Throw in the 4-8 season and what you have is a handful of successes paired with a lot of failure.
The evidence clearly points to the possibility that Kelly has reached his ceiling at ND.
The fact that Kelly has recruited so well makes it even more frustrating. My opinion is that ND has had the talent to play with the big boys. Kelly has done well stocking the cupboard. Why has he been unable, in 8 years, to WIN once? And I'm not talking about the stinking Citrus Bowl and Music City Bowl.
4-8 last year was just the most recent piece of evidence.
What about the other 96teams?
Who has done more than Kelly?
The 4 teams above.
I am going on to Amazon ship your ass a mirror, a calculator and a bible.
Chill out
Go IRISH!!!
You post like an over caffeinated 12 year old boy yet you tell me to chill out.
Alrighty then.
Continue to accept failure. I shall not.
kicked in by the good ones.

Don't recall him ever being anything but gracious after he left. If he threw shade, I must have missed it.

Towards the end of his year here he (and it may have been mostly his dad) threw out some negative comments about not playing. also i believe that there was a tweet or two before he signed with Florida, i could be wrong though. either way, it kind of makes my point, there has been very little.

players to the NFHell, mind changes by recruits, etc-----happen to EVERY team. I believe Alabama just had 5 guys
declare for the draft. Teams inquired about Holtz assistants all the time and he lost several who went on to be solid coaches.
Coach Kelly has not been shy about reinventing himself in order to make the program better----and believe me, it's in far better shape than when he
took it over. Is he perfect? Of course not, nor should he be expected to be. Programs ebb and flow and right now, ND is on a significant upswing. I
intend to enjoy it while it lasts. As a rabid fan myself I hate to see ND lose but it's inevitable. What an awesome turnaround we just
witnessed. Next year may be even better.
But this year was a turnaround only in record and on defense. For the past 4 seasons ND has lost key games in November dashing the hopes of making it to the CFP.
I won't argue that Kelly recruits well. He does. I won't argue that Kelly hired some good coaches in the offseason. He did. But you can't argue with facts. The fact that ND has collapsed every November for the past 4 year is a major concern. Kelly himself has openly stated that there is nothing to play for outside of a National Championship. He got there in 2012 but arguably didn't deserve to be there. If the team had made the CFP at least once, or won at least one BCS game or won it all in 2012, my tune would be much different. Instead, ND got embarrassed by Bama in 2012, beat handily in the Fiesta Bowl and lost in November every year of the CFP era so far. Kelly has failed to win the big games in 8 years of trying.
I prefer not to go through a coaching change. I like the stability of the program. But ... Kelly has proven over 8 years he can't win the big game. 8 years!
with a few others. The last four years are average recruiting rank was about 12, we finished 11th so he is average but may get better, with a little better quarterbacking. Just about everyone expected Wimbush to be a star because of his athletic ability but he was not yet a polished QB. I actually think we could have won more with Book.
im not saying kelly is the best coach and should be at ND forever and all that. I was putting a lot of my faith in him on how they played in the LSU game. I figured if they came out flat and got beat up, then it was probably time to part ways and that would be best for both parties. Now they came out pretty good, for a bowl game, and had a lot of high points this year (definitely some low ones as well). Given where everything is right now, today, i am happy he is staying. There are so many improvements to this program since he has been there. They are not far off where they need to be and have been close to getting over that hump a number of times.
My opinion, which doesnt mean much, is that i think the ND coach should average about 9 wins a season. 10 wins would be a great year, with 8 being disappointing. BUT every 4-5 years there has to be a serious push for the NC, and that means making the playoffs or being the next one out, so basically 11+ wins. I just feel like that is a realistic goal and can show a solid & stable program. If you expect your team to win 11 a year, and your not named Alabama, you are going to be disappointing. And when saban is gone, they will regress as well.
All in all, i think kelly has brought some stability to this program, now he has to better. I think early on, his team suffered because we started having guys perform good enough to leave early for the NFL. this was not something ND was use to and we didn't have the depth to replace the guys leaving every year. I believe we are moving away from that problem, but now we are facing the problem of people wanting our coaches. Once again, the program has to be strong enough to absorb that blow every year.
All in all, i think kelly can put together a team to win a NC, whether or not he will... i guess we will see. Its a fun game though.
any of the above, you have to win the major bowl you would be in about half the time.
Kelly hasn’t won any MAJOR bowl in 8 seasons. Ultimately that’s what matters.
Handful of players out. Players that didn’t play much stepped up.
The fact that he was willing to allow Book to play says a lot. He should have allowed him to play more during the season.
The lack of Dexter in that game is still concerning though.
I’m willing to “wait and see” after year one of Kelly 2.0 but I stick by my assessment of the previous 8 years. It’s enough, IMO, to look for a new coach.
seeing the Irish in the CFP and / or the NC? Hell yes I would but I don't obsess over it, otherwise I miss alot of other
great stuff happening. BK is the face of the program and is thus responsible for Ws and Ls. I believe the biggest things
holding him back were himself and holding onto his crony coaches. Both of these have changed significantly of late.
Our "late season losses", ie. November, I believe are traceable back to Longo-----the team simply wasn't fit enough physically
to finish strong. Balles has had an incredibly positive effect on the S&C of the team. HOWEVER, and I believe we have both
read about this, the Balles effect cannot be brought to full effect in one year---it's a process that must be built upon over time. As
such, I believe we will begin to see a reduction in late-season (perhaps even late-game) meltdowns. This is not something BK
could do by himself. Instead, he canned Longo and brought in Balles who has made a difference.
Finally, I might also suggest that many of the changes incorporated recently by BK (even self changes) will need a bit more time
for full development before "consistent" results will be seen. But it's happening and it's worth being positive about despite the
occasional loss.
i agree with you. Not very often can a program flip a switch and go from crap to elite. 8 years is a long time, but this program was really really bad before he took over. I think that they are smart for revising their schedule. There are significant advantages to being Independent, but their schedule is tougher than most. In this day, you aren't going to win 12 games playing 6-7 ranked teams with solid teams behind them.
For most of the time kelly has been here, they just haven't been able to maintain a solid team on both offense and defense. either one is good or the other one is. i liked alot of what i saw this year. I never expected them to win it all this year. It took till NCST before i considered them a top 10 team, and that was crushed soon after. I saw them as a 13-15 ranked team. BUT i liked the personal i saw on the field. I saw a program that could lose a guy or two and not go to crap. Their are still gaps in some positions, but they are closing in on that. I wish it didn't take 8 years to get here, but i feel pretty good moving forward. They have some tough games next year, but i see them hovering around that 11/10 win mark
were all very good moves. However, my faith in Kelly is too shaken to just be positive.
To me is seems like the fan base has been forced to just be positive since Holtz. Every year it’s said next year is the year.
