Can we take more than 25 total players this year. I’m assuming there isn’t a limit as Tennessee took over 30 a few years ago. Reason I’m asking is what if all 4 of these players want to come to ND. Irvin, keys, Boykin and petit-frere

good enough to win a championship. It takes the right kind of coaching and development. Elko showed that ND can have a good enough defense. ND's achilles heel was the QB position. Replace Wimbush with a 60% passer that is a slightly worse runner and I think ND beats Georgia and Stanford. Miami is still a question because of the way we lost.
The talent is there. The decision to ride Wimbush all season even though he was one dimensional QB was the mistake made this past season. Not to mention not playing Dexter more. Both HC decisions. For eight seasons Kelly has made these head scratching choices.
Wimbush supposedly had it all, great arm strength and tremendous runner. The problem was he did not know how to play with QB skills in seeing the whole field and looking receivers off. He also obviously was not accurate, so despite his arm strength he was a terrible passer this year. I don't know if people can improve that aspect.
At least I hope you know..His recrujiting pool Is maybe 50% of B ama, OSU, FSU, etc, etc..due to rules, restrictions, and academic requirements....and this isn't the 40s anymore, many a kid has no interest in attending ND, and all that goes with it...If you can go to a warmer climate, surrounded by pretty girls, and handed a new car..many a kid will opt for that..
You can get a fine education at most if not all of these schools.
ND doesnt have the market cornered. Dont kid yourself that it does.
Plus these other schools have a far better recent track record of sending top notch players into the NFL
Players that actually play in the NFL.
Also the entry bar for Kelly has been lowered significantly; he admitted that several years ago.

Just guesses: Keys, Boykin, and a late-offer RB. (I think Petit-Ferere was a real possibility, but the departure of Hiestand makes that less likely.)
Currently, with the latest "casualties" ND is at 84. But we have to be careful because with the probable exception of Stepherson who's all but toast, the other 3 recently cut loose may have avenues back to the team.
Given the track record, it is possible that we will have more guys leaving on their own but I would guess worst case might be 2.
Since ND is still chasing guys, I would bet that Kelly either anticipates more guys leaving and/or knows that some of the 4 recent guys aren't going to be back in the fall.
A number of SEC schools consistently sign over 30, notably Alabama. I would love to know how they do that and stay at 85. Somehow they use blueshirts, greyshirts (whatever they are) to stay at 85. Do they rescind scholarships from down the liners? Rule should be 25 a year no exceptions.
The first rule: An FBS team can have 85 scholarship players at a time.
Unlike most other college sports, football at the top level is a head-count sport. That means those 85 scholarships are full rides for 85 individuals. There’s no dividing the value of scholarships among teammates.
The second rule: An FBS team can bring in 25 new scholarship players in one signing class.
The limit is on 25 “initial counters,” which you can think of as players in their first year on an athletic scholarship. But a team can bring in more than 25 enrollees in a given year, in a few circumstances. Most commonly, if an athlete graduates high school early and enrolls for the spring semester, and if the school stayed under a cap of 25 in the previous year, it can assign enrollees to the previous class, up to the 25-man total cap.
If a player wants to delay his enrollment until the following spring, he can then be assigned to the following year’s class. But all players must be attributed to either a prior, current, or future class, and no class can exceed 25.
The only exceptions are Army, Navy, and Air Force. Every service academy student is on a non-athletic scholarship anyway, though those teams have a long list of other recruiting challenges that more than levels the playing field.
Conferences have their own rules, too. The SEC has a limit of 28 signees between December and May, which limits how many players a team can enroll early to avoid breaching the 25-man cap. The Big Ten’s rule is similar and also features a cap of 28 per year.
