My fandom but I rarely hear him mentioned in ND lore.

He was a great guest. Very easy to talk to, shared some funny stories, seemed like he wasn’t disinterested.....or at least he’s a great actor. I’ve been a big fan ever since.
I suspect this made him less popular than the more humble superstars on campus. None of his teams won a championship... although ending the Texas 30 game winning streak in the Cotton Bowl is one of my favorite Irish memories. In my opinion, he was the most elusive passing QB in ND history.

seemed to get along with his teammates very well and he was nice to ordinary guys like me. I played a little pick up basketball with him too. He wanted the ball. Man he was clutch though and my absolute favorite QB of all time. Ara loved him.
Maybe they didn't win a national title with Joe, but that 1970 10-1 team was the best in the country..Only loss was to an inferior 4 loss USC team, ironically on a day when Joe had maybe his greatest day, 33 completions for 526 yards in rain. And he was nothing short of terrific as ND dismantled no. 1 undefeated Texas in Cotton Bowl, 24-11, 1/1/71..He also played a great game in 70 Cotton Bowl, ( 69 season) when ND lost 21-17 in last minute to an undefeated, no. 1 Texas..in NDs return to the bowl scene.
Of all the QBS Ive seen at ND going back to the 50s, Joe has to be in the discussion, as to who is the best..

confident and arrogant. He’s very intelligent and very professional but can easily rub someone the wrong way. You may recall that Joe openly endorsed Charlie Weis for head coach when it appeared no one else would take the position.
Davie and the Fat man. Since 1981 they have had “8” head coaches of which 6 were highly questionable to just shitty hires.
That's all you need to know.
Seriously though, he's an all-time great at ND and in the NFL. Not sure his "lore" would be considered unknown.

pronounced Thees man.
still happy to call him a fellow alum, but not his best moment.

they only played 10 games in the regular season back then. Archie Manning was the most talented of the group of four on the cover of one magazine, in the first year of the quarterback, but when he suffered a broken arm, Joe had the best year of any of those QBs that year. I will say Plunkett led Stanford to victory over Ohio State in Rose Bowl that year but he had no where near the regular season Joe had. We had the one unlucky loss to USC at the end and of course we beat Texas to break their streak.
