I support whoever we get and many exceed these high school ratings. But we used to be on the cream of the cream and nowadays it seems like we are not even making an effort for the these guys. I suspect the whole ND environment is a turnoff for guys who are already planning for an NFL lifestyle.
It may be pure demographics. It seems like the South is breeding more of these nowadays. Of course, we did lure Stephon Tuitt up north. My belief is that winning in football starts with the D line,
you mean like james Aldridge and dayne Christ.. yep.. 5 stars mean everything

Clemson...the team that won a NC and was in the NC game the year before. I"m not going to put their numbers up again...Go look at the recruiting rankings for those classes 2-4yrs leading up to that run. ND's classes were higher ranked. Much higher in some years. It's not just about having 5 star talent. In fact, the 5 star talent wont even matter if the coaches can not develop them. Sure if you had a whole field of Jaylon Smiths you're going to win...but he's a once in a decade talent. Alabama gets a lot 5 star kids that do nothing...absolutely nothing. Guys everyone on LOI day goes gaga for and then 3yrs later you're like...yo...what happened to...
Tell you right now....BK has had plenty enough talent to win a couple NCs. Guys like Dabo and Chris Petersen are as close or further along than he is with lesser "ranked" talent. Stanford and Oregon have gotten just as close with much lower ranked classes.
Get a top 10 class and coach em up. THATS IT!
amaze us with attitude and laziness. Gimme a hungry 3* any time.
A 4* with a little of both lol
when was Stanford or Washington or Boise in the NC game? I must have missed that year!
GO IRISH!!!!
I actually meant Oregon sorry, not Washington but Petersen has been 13-0, 12-1, 12-1, 14-0 and won two BCS bowls! BK ain't won one...Actually could've had one (maybe) if he stayed with Cincy in 2009. And Stanford's David Shaw has one two BCS bowls as well....
And both Shaw and Petersen have finished seasons ranked as higher or higher than any ND team under Kelly
and ND's 2012 team was barely BKs' players. And ND didn't go through a playoff to get in that game. Soo...basically the point is again...the talent is there.

excellent point...
ND is getting a lot of the guys they are targeting. Also, keep in mind that there is not much difference between a 5* and very highly ranked 4*...see Phil Jurkovic and Derrick Allen.
That said, it is obvious that there needs to be the right fit with 5* players. See Greg Bryant, Max Redfield, Aaron Lynch, Ishaq Williams and Alize Mack (who still has time to live up to the hype, but I'm skeptical it will happen). I think Kelly has learned that fit at ND is more important than star rankings.
Fans should stop thinking in terms of ranking and more on hitting top targets and how the team is built. Kelly and Swarbrick talked about it last year. More than likely top 5-6-7-8 classes aren't going to happen and Notre Dame doesn't care.

And three of the top 13. Elston (#3), Quinn (#10), Lea (#13). I'm guessing Quinn will climb a couple of notches after the Correll announcement.

for a major head coaching job, Weis would be exhibit A..

When's the last time some kid had a semi pull up in his driveway or had his mailbox exploded with postcards? Be glad they're doing it the right way now because it will weed out the Redfields all by itself.
It has all to do with the numbers of 5 star players who want to be challenged academically. It is a very small percentage and Stanford, Northwestern, Vandy, Rice, Virginia, and Duke want those two or three also...and some years there are not any. It is pretty simple. Other schools at which those players can get a top and challenging education actually try to steer great student athletes onto an easier path.
ND is in of a few five star players every year, but getting them to give up the easy path is not in the character of most of them.
