We are more than paper thin at RB, and this combined with losing Nelson and McGlinchey as well as UM's upcoming peak year in defensive talent is going to make things potentially difficult in the first game.
Edit - I feel that it should be mentioned that hansen did not reveal his sources, and that this announcement is not official, but hansen iis not prone to hyperbole or fake news.

I shake my head wondering how one day the RB position is loaded with talent and the next Kelly is scrambling to build a depth chart.

C’Bo Flemster will not have been on campus that long, but could play if needed.
Three of those guys have never had a carry in a game, and of them, only Armstrong looked the part in
Spring Game I attended.
Any of them will be able to carry the ball. The question is
can any of them, including Williams, pick up the blitz while the relatively inexperienced OL gels. If not, Wimbush could take a pounding against Michigan. Hope I’m wrong about that.
Jahmir Smith had 29 yards on five carries and looked good to me from TV coverage.

According to University rules the only thing that would result in a 4 game suspension (and would therefore be beyond the control of Kelly) would be:
Second Positive Test for Marijuana-
- ban from intercollegiate competition for 33% of championship segment
- probation for 1 year
That said, there is an appeals process and it is not exactly clear if results of testing administered by entities other than ND or NCAA can be used to sanction an athlete.
