I'm watching teams all over the country on Saturday, including Shurmur at Vandy, that have better QB's than ND has had in the last 10 years. And as we know some schools even have two QB's and both are so good either one can play. Who is recruiting these QB's? Or do the QB's see the results over the past few years and never give ND the opportunity. It's a serious problem for the program.
QB out there who will say,” Notre Dame was one of my choices but they didn’t show me any interest”
This is only measurable in action. No one in the world forsaw that Tom Brady had this unique talent. The jump from high school speed to the college game is a quantum leap.
Play calling, Scheme, lack of development, poor planning, bubble screens, wide receiver screens, running backs run play into stacked D line, It's hard to win philosophy=the give up generation mantra..
We have not struggled to land elite Q.B. recruits. We have had issues with development and the scheme of choice.

Golson transferred, Kizer left early, Zaire and Wimbush overrated. None lived up to their potential.
Now the others, well, I have to agree, that they didn't live up to their potential.
In the case of Dayne Crist, blowing out both knees, and then basically being viewed as the red-headed step child by Coach Kelly, didn't help things. He was actually having a decent season in 2010 before that second knee injury against Tulsa.
In the case of Tommy Rees, well, we got about everything we could have gotten out of him. The fact that we were able to squeeze out 9 wins in that 2013 season, despite the offense being all but crippled, was as good as a season as we could have had. Maybe one more win, but that would have really been stretching it.
Golson's problems were his own making. For some reason, he lost his mojo in the second half of 2014.
Malik Zaire's problems came from two things. First, the injury robbed him of a golden opportunity in 2015. Second, Deshone Kizer's emergence as the real deal, killed off his chances of ever being a starter again. I don't think he ever recovered from that awful injury in 2015, as evidence by his very poor showing in Florida, where he was unable to beat out a green player.
The jury is still out on Brandon Wimbush, but the fact that he still hasn't established himself as the bona fide #1, go-to guy, even though he's a senior, isn't a good omen.

I like his film. He runs well. 12 rushing TDs his junior year. He runs a very similar offense to what ND runs.
Kelly can recruit talent. All the top kids are interested in ND at some point. Not all choose ND.
Kelly destroys them once they join the program. He doesn’t let good players be good players.

You were claiming we couldn't get elite recruits at Q.B. anymore. That was false.
question is, as you say they were elite. But ND coaching failed them, or they were never elite to begin with. Can you ruin true talent. Did Golson fair better once he transferred? Is Kizer starting in the NFL? I could make a case that they were never elite to begin with.

I don’t think you make it through that competition without being capable. Coaching in college has to continue and be good.
BTW ... not a Wimbush fan in his current form. I believe he is a mix of bad coaching and head case.
You can’t reasonably expect high school QBs to step on campus and just light it up with the exception of the 1% 5 star guys. And even in the case their coaches are letting them play rather than saying they aren’t ready like Kelly does.
Point is, coaching has so much to do with it.

Problem is they aren’t coaching them in college.
Brandon Wimbush is the perfect example. Elite 11 guy. Beat out Sam Darnold to earn a spot in the final 11 that year. Sam Darnold had some bumps at USC but is considered an elite QB. Wimbush obviously did something right but can’t handle the pressures of the college game. Kelly can’t predict that. He can only do a better a job coaching.
Recruiting services can only rank kids based on how they perform in high school. High school to college is a huge jump.
Your point was that ND isn’t recruiting good QBs but your evidence is based on hindsight. There is no hindsight in recruiting. You get what you think is good and hope it works out. Having a solid coaching staff tends to help out.

Crist was done after his injuries.
Golson performed well. Actually better at ND than FSU. He also killed his own development by being an idiot and getting kicked out of school.
We didn't have enough of a sample on Zaire.
Kizer was extremely productive.
Winbush is well, Winbush.
fair share but settle for others. Current rating / expectations

When as many QBs fail that have failed with ND you look at the common denominator ... coaching.
But some kids just don’t work despite coaching.
well turning the program fully around, but he's exactly what Mark Richt was at UGA. Just good enough to not be fired and not good enough to really be a contender.
