BK always elects to receive. he wants to play from a lead, I get it. But, it always gives the opposing team a head start come half time. Opposing teams plan on this to build momentum in the second half. I think this contributes to our momentum stalls in the 3rd quarter.
Also, BK always goes for 2 too early in the game. If you wait until the last scoring drive to go for 2, then the opposing coach must assume you will get 2 points, and must play accordingly (e.g., he can't get too conservative). He plays as if you converted. But, if you go for 2 and fail, he can adjust his play calling and clock management.
but you cannot argue with the strategy in this season because it has led to scores in all 3 games.
But I do like your take on the attempt at 2 points so early in the game. I never thought of it that way before—that opposing coaches have to play you like will get it if you haven’t gone for it yet, but can play it differently if you try and fail.
I will say that my perception of the “early” attempt at 2 seems to often lead to a situation where you wish had that one extra point. Maybe going for 2 when coming from behind makes more sense than when trying to extend a lead? Either way, waiting until the very end to try for the 2 would be my preference. I wonder, in this Billy Ball world, if anyone has actually crunched the numbers to determine success rates rather than just a prospective point-based analysis to drive strategy.
