Let me speculate on the reason Book has sat on the bench. It seems the overwhelming "in the know" thinking is that BW has a tremendous upside to him ... almost unlimited!
With that in mind Kelly was betting on the unrealized upside to BW ... betting on the come that never came, so to speak, .
I'm not saying it definitely was fool gold (lots of coaching and play calling mistakes), but that it probably the conventional thinking.
however with their take on Book vs Wimbush makes me think, they don't know ND well enough - example: Wimbush does not throw the short, the screen, the swing passes with any amount of accuracy that would justify keeping him in as QB. Wimbush is also inaccurate deep 50/50 balls, and doesn't anticipate well where the receiver is going to be. They get his strength in the running game right but they miss Book is now an upgrade as far as the pass goes. We saw Book run well vs LSU last year and against WF, so, so far, his running ability, though not Wimbush dangerous shows he has the ability to make positive plays with his legs.
I like Wimbush and think athletically he has the much higher ceiling but if you cannot get the ball accurately to your playmakers on a high %, your not the solution; Book seems more capable in doing so.
