came to mind while watching the game.
1) Book seems to be the perfect QB for Kelly's pass heavy spread. What exactly did Long and he see during the spring and fall that put BW at the top of the list?
2) like Hurts at Alabama and Terrell Pryor about a decade ago, BW is a great athlete who will never play QB in the NFL. I'm sure he's contemplating a transfer or retirement. I think he'd be smart to go to Kelly and say he'd like to have the opportunity to explore playing as a WR or something similar. He has the kind of talent that really needs to be on the field.
We didn't look 'that' good vs USC last year, USC just looked 'that' bad when we played them last year.
Stanford didn't 'not come to play' last night or play poorly and make us look better. They brought it and we just kicked their ass because we played great...only other game like that under Kelly that comes to my mind, where we actually won vs top 10 caliber competition on a day they didn't play poorly was OU in 2012.
FSU in '14 also comes to mind, but we got jobbed by the refs and lost that one.
this shows that our DF is very good and the DF and OF line in good.
part of the game. Last night was a complete, great win against a very good physical team with a good QB, receivers and running back.
Pass heavy spread? Really? Book was 24/33 and some of the passes were basically long hand offs. Take away Books 15 runs and they still had 40 carries. Not bad for a "pass heavy spread". Give them credit, they put together a great game plan and beat the hell out of a quality team.
I wish I knew why they started Wimbush, maybe it's respect for the kid because they say he is great leader and loved by his teammates. But Book made throws last night that Wimbush couldn't. Over LB's and in front of the CB's. Now with a QB making throws and the D playing out of this world, they can make some noise towards the playoffs. The game this weekend in Blacksburg will say a ton about the mental strength of this team. Hopefully they learned from the mess in Miami last year.
especially the flip pass in the 4th quart.
The USC game which I attended was the best that I saw BW play.
Last two weeks: 95 rushes, 69 passes, almost a 60/40 run pass split.
Chip Long told us he wanted to be a running offense and they have been, no matter the quarterback.
You can't just point to the last two weeks and rewrite history. Truth is, for the vast majority of his time here, we have been a pass heavy spread by comparison to the teams who run the spread successfully.
The last two weeks are very encouraging, hopefully it continues.
The last 18 games it's a 61/39 run/pass ratio.
Maybe you wanted 61/39 the whole time, which is fair. But, the pass happy thing stems from his first two seasons and 2013 with Rees, and even that season they had more rushes than passes.
It doesn't just stem from that, it stems from periods in games, in more than just those seasons when Kelly would completely abandon the run game for long stretches, sometimes inexplicably when we were actually running the ball very well.
At the end of those games you might look at final stats and go 'oh, we ran more times than we passed' so all good. But no, those stretches where he goes Air Kelly have cost us games...he's earned his pass happy moniker, if you think not then maybe you weren't paying attention at that time.
but that depends on the DF. Hopefully it is a balanced OF.

versions of the spread offense. Kelly's system always has used the pass to set up the run. His offenses, even with Golson and BW, have rarely incorporated zone reads and triple options.

Like in the 60, 70 percent range.
They usually throw less times, but are very efficient with their passes and have a lot of big plays from them.
d fit for Kelly's offense. Kelly rarely runs zone read options, so BW will never be a great fit for what he wants to do with his offense. His best QB's always will be those who are accurate with a very quick release.

Yes.... great points...quick release, accurate.... quick decisions had Stanford on their heels second half....
Maybe running back with all the injuries right now.
