Does kelly not like dexter Williams. He was by far the best player on the field last week. Very explosive and fresh. Why in gods name would your best player be the Number 2 rb behind Tony Jones Jr and Not the starter
You know, i gave this forum a chance again, but im done, its not worth it. Oldirish and Chrisb you win. You clearly feel like you know more then me or anyone else and having a civil discussion about it isn't going to happen because no matter anyone says, your going to think its wrong. Its not worth the fighting over stuff that doesn't matter. Our opinions don't mean anything. None of us know 1/4 of what the worst coach on ND's staff knows. This turning to into insults and attacks...nothing i want to be apart of. Say what you want, call me names i don't care, but i have no intention of replying anymore. I have been a limited poster, but a long long time reader. Its a shame it turns to stuff like this and i regret letting myself get caught up in it. Im going to go through and delete my posts, especially the ones where i started throwing insults and i apologize for it.
I think this team is molding into something special. I think this team buys into kelly, regardless what any of us think of his coaching ability. One thing i will leave you with, if Kelly is such a terrible coach, why has there only been one person, out of all the people who have graduated, transferred, left early, changed jobs, etc, one person ever came back and said anything negative about kelly? In this day, where everyone has a voice on social media, where coaches are getting slammed all over the place, former players and coaches, with the exception of MZ, have never come back with any hard feelings towards kelly. That shows me that the team buys into him, and right now, thats all that matters.
This is a great sport and a great university.

Dexter looked great, though. Explosive, and he ran tough.

career carries.
2015 - 21 carries / 81 yds / 1 TD = 3.86 ypc
2016 - 38 / 200 / 3 = 5.26 ypc --- 0 carries in Texas (OT), Mich St., and Va Tech losses; Duke loss - only 5 carries; Stan loss - only 2 carries. All losses less than 8pts and most by 3pts
2017 - 39 / 360 / 4 = 9.23 ypc --- 0 carries in UGA 1 pt loss after rushing for 124 yds week before. Did not get hurt until 2 weeks later. 0 carries USC loss and 3 carries in Stanford loss
2018 - 21 / 121 / 1 = 5.76 ypc
Total - 120 / 802 / 9 = 6.68 ypc
Clearly, the ONLY reason you would leave this type of production of the field is for a personal dislike. No matter how bad the kid blocks that's not his job. His job is to run the football and he does it very, very well; both statistically and in live game action. He's not a "potential" guy. He's proved it. Also, his carries aren't low because of injury. He was barely injured last year. He definitely wasn't injured any more than Josh Adams from 2015 to 2017, so this has nothing to do with his not seeing the field.
Kelly would have to convenice me otherwise that he doesn't have something against Dexter. And, to support it, Kelly did the EXACT same thing to Cierre Wood who was the last real back we had. Not knocking Adams, he was good but he didn't have the same talent as Wood in college.
By the same token, Adams got the following carries
2015 - 117 / 835 / 6 === This is = Williams career total! And almost identical except Adams got to do it in one season
2016 - 158 / 933 / 5
2017 - 206 / 1420 / 9
I don't write this as an Adams vs. Williams. I write this as what an idiot Brian Kelly is. He wastes a TON of talent on the bench. From 2015 to 2017 ND could have had a monster of a backfield. Instead we relied on the ebs and flows of one single guy. If BK had a brain we would have beat UGA and other top teams / close games with the simplest, half brained substitution effort at the RB position alone, no less the debacle of decisions at QB. Kelly can recruit but his depth chart decisions are VERY costly.

and gameday management. He's awful at these two areas.

write it. Just be able to support it. There aren't any right or wrong answers. Just good and bad logic.
Book. If Dex and Book play at all that game we win. I'll take you to Vegas on that one and put the money on the table. Too bad we can't go back and see.

moving the sticks here or there would have made a huge difference. To half the boards dismay, the excuse they like to point out, the missed block by the left tackle at the end was not why we lost the game.

the perfect example of what makes you sound like you don't know shit.
No one said or implied that he was the greatest running back of all time, just that his skill set was better suited for certain games where running space was limited and a long strider who needs space to get up to speed where they are effective (like Adams) wasn't going to be as productive.
oldirish has been throwing knowledge and facts at you through this whole conversation, but you have your head too far up Kelly's ass to recognize it. Anyone with at least half a set of good eyes and a squirt of piss worth of football IQ can see that Dex and Adams have completely different running styles /skill sets, and Dex's skills are the type that are more effective in the type of game GA was last year. Him picking up two or three yards when not much was there, instead of Adams picking up nothing or losing a yard could have changed the whole dynamic of the game by putting us in better down and distances. Just as importantly, it would have spelled Adams and kept him fresher for the fourth quarter, when in fact GAs defense wore down some and those running lanes that weren't there early on started opening up. The game was there to be won in the 4th, but unfortunately our champion steed had dead legs and couldn't take advantage due to the shitty chess moves Kelly made (or in this case didn't make) all game long.
Your notion that Dex just didn't put in the work to play or just wasn't good enough is 1) pure speculation and nothing more than an attempt to throw monkey shit on the wall and hope it sticks, and 2) likely based on all contextual evidence, completely false.
Here are things we know:
•Dex was good enough and worked hard enough as a true Freshman to get playing time with guys like Folston, Prosise, Adams and Jones on the RB depth chart...and he was good enough and worked hard enough that he
1) ranked fourth on the team in rushes, tied for fourth in rushing TDs and sixth in rushing yards (again, with Folston, Prosise, Adams, and Tony Jones on the depth chart) and 2) five of his 21 carries went for a first down or touchdown (as a true Freshman signs were already there that he could have a big impact on a game)
•Dex was good enough and worked hard enough as a Sophomore that even after getting in trouble off the field when he was arrested for possession of weed and an unregistered firearm, he 1) still played in all 12 games 2) gained 200 rushing yards on 39 carries, including three TD runs 3) ranked fourth on the team in rushes, fourth in rushing yards and third in rushing TDs, and 4) nine of his 39 carries went for a first down or touchdown
**NOTE** Now after seeing what Dex did in his Freshman and Sophomore seasons, everyone knew that if he kept his nose clean we had a serious playmaker who could help this team win football games, and Kelly even acknowledged this himself. And to our knowledge he did keep his nose clean and reports from fall camp before his Junior year had him doing great and set to be an awesome 1 - 2 compliment to Adams and Kelly spoke highly of what he did in that fall camp and said we should expect to see a lot more of Dex on the field at the RB position.
•Dex was good enough and worked hard enough as a Junior that even with Adams having a career year and then later in the year Dex missing 3 games with minor injury and presumably his first positive weed test suspension, he still 1) saw action in 10 games 2) gained 360 rushing yards on 39 carries, including four TD runs 3) averaged 9.2 yards per rush, which led the team among ball carriers with at least 35 attempts 4) 17 of his 39 carries went for a first down or touchdown, and 5) ranked fifth on the team in rushes, fourth in rushing yards and fourth in rushing TDs
•Dex was good enough and worked hard enough as a Senior that even with a weed possession charge, an unregistered firearm charge, and two (2) positive weed tests, he got in the game as soon as his University mandated four game suspension was up and immediately ignited a semi-stagnant run game against the toughest team we've played yet this season.
Yet inexplicably, when he had put in the work before his Junior season, had received praise from those who got to see him in practice, had received praise from his HC with the promise of seeing a lot more of #2 at RB, and most importantly had kept his nose clean, in a game against GA when he was #2 on the depth chart and his specific skill set was better suited, than a tall rangy long strider who needed space to get up to speed, Dexter Williams who had 6 carries for 124 yards and a TD just the week before, got exactly ZERO carries against GA.
This was an epic failure on Kelly's part and maybe (maybe not) cost us the game. At the end of the day, you don't keep a talent like that, who's shown what he has, who's put in the work, who's kept his nose clean, who's received the praise from everyone including the HC, and who just the week before showed he is just as effective (if not more so) as the starter, on the bench for the whole game in a close slug fest like that while the #1 guy is showing to be completely ineffective while wallowing in futility for the whole game. Good coaches make a switch to try and light a spark and then maybe bring the starter back once things get rolling.
But not Kelly, nope, lost his shit under the bright lights once again, but you like the smell of his shit so much you dismiss it as Dex just wasn't good enough or hadn't put in the work. Unfortunately for you, the data (facts) doesn't support this and actually shows that you are full of shit.
I wasn't going to write anything this long, logical and detailed, as I feel you are likely too stupid to absorb it and therefore unworthy of the data bytes used, but figured I'd give you one final chance to either show your ass again or wise up before I write you off and tell you to choke on a bag of dicks.
the best I've ever read on this forum! Congrats and hats off.

the car, gun and the weed with the other dingbats? If so, that was his FR year? What about the no shows in his So and Jr year when he would have been a great addition. I know the injuries were last year but that was only like 2-3 weeks and Adams was just as hurt.
"Senior safety Max Redfield, sophomore linebacker Te'von Coney, sophomore running back Dexter Williams, redshirt freshman cornerback Ashton White and freshman receiver Kevin Stepherson were all arrested on a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana in Fulton County, about 35 miles south of South Bend. Redfield, Stepherson and Williams were also booked on an additional charge of possession of a handgun without a license."
After this I believe he tested positive for weed during Jr season and then tested positive for weed a second time prior to Sr season.
Here's what he did on the field season by season..
FRESHMAN SEASON (2015) ***he was behind Folston, CJ, and Adams this season, so it's surprising he got any touches***
•Played in seven games, primarily as a reserve running back
•Gained 81 rushing yards on 21 carries, including his first career TD on a 14-yard run against UMass (Sept. 26)
•Ranked fourth on the team in rushes, tied for fourth in rushing TDs and sixth in rushing yards
SOPHOMORE SEASON (2016) ***with Folston and CJ both gone, he shoulda got mad PT this season but he spent the whole year in Kelly's doghouse (aka sheshed) but he got enough touches in games that we knew exactly what he was capable of going into 2017***
•Played in all 12 games, primarily as a reserve running back
•Gained 200 rushing yards on 39 carries, including three TD runs
•Ranked fourth on the team in rushes, fourth in rushing yards and third in rushing TDs
•Rushed for a career-high 80 yards on eight carries against Syracuse (Oct. 1), including a career-best 59-yard TD run
•Nine of his 39 carries went for a first down or touchdown
JUNIOR SEASON (2017) ***didn't get anywhere near the PT he should have early in the season and then late in the season he was injured [subtitled: first weed suspension]***
•Saw action in 10 games
•Did not play against Miami, Ohio (Sept. 30), North Carolina (Oct. 7) and USC (Oct. 21)
•Gained 360 rushing yards on 39 carries, including four TD runs
•Averaged 9.2 yards per rush, which led the team among ball carriers with at least 35 attempts
•Ranked fifth on the team in rushes, fourth in rushing yards and fourth in rushing TDs
•Caught two passes for 13 yards, inculding a TD reception at Michigan State (Sept. 23)
•17 of his 39 carries went for a first down or touchdown

gaping hole you could run a dumptruck through. See any game against a team that stacked the box. Now, I don't dislike Adams and he backed up his game with stats, but the team would have been much better the last three years if Kelly had given Dexter at least 10 touches a game.
This would have achieved many goals and saved Adams from the constant dings and injuries we saw him have as well as leave him more fresh.

Do you recall what happened against sound D's that didn't have 14 foot wide holes? That's right, probably not. Because it was nothing. Go look at the stats and games. It's all there.
What are talking about? You don’t get yards after contact just running through 14 foot wide holes. Adams didn’t fall over at first touch. Adams was/is a good back, with toughness and speed. It’s why he’s on an active NFL roster. One can recognize that Adams was good and applaud Dex too. It isn’t either/or. I love Dexter. Glad he’s back from suspension. He’s a huge asset.
The point was made that yes, Adams did have a lot of yards after contact, but a lot of them would be after running through a huge hole, then grazing or pushing a small DB and then getting credit for running 50 yards after "contact"; when really it was if no one had touched him. Most of his "after contact" yards weren't like what you would see from a Nick Chubb or Leonard Fornette.
Adams struggled dearly when it game to non-Mac level defenses. And don't blame it on the OL. We practically supplied the NFL with 1st round linemen every year while Adams was in school. I'm not trying to knock the guy. He had a great career at ND, but I think he was a bit overrated when it came to running against real time defenses. Take a look at the below.
Freshman year:
100+ yard games: Massachusetts, Pitt, Wake, Stanford
< 50 yds: Texas, Virginia, GT, Clemson, Navy, USC, Boston College & 78 against Ohio St.
Soph:
100+ yard games: Nevada, Syracuse, Va. Tech, USC
< 50 yds: Texas, Mich St, Duke, NC St, Stanford, Miami, Navy, Army
Jr Year:
200 yds: NC St
100+ yard games: Temple, Boston College, Miami OH, North Carolina, USC, Navy
<50: UGA, Michigan St, Wake, Miami, Stanford, LSU
Total:
100+ yds against mid-tier to Mac level schools: (11) Massachusetts, Pitt, Wake, Nevada, Syracuse, NC St, Temple, BC, Miami OH, NC, Navy
100+ yds against competitive to Elite schools: (4) Stanford, Va Tech, USC, USC
<50 yds against mid-tier to Mac level schools: (8) GT, Navy, BC, Duke, NC St, Navy, Army, Wake
<50 yds against competitive to Elite Schools: (14) Texas, Virginia, Clemson, USC, OSU (78), Texas, MSU, Stanford, Miami, UGA, MSU, Miami, Stanford, LSU
19 games against weak competition: 100+ yds: (11/19) = 58% <50 yds: (8/19) = 42%
18 games against quality competition: 100+ yds: (4/18) = 22% <50 yds: (14/18) = 78%
Looks can be decieving. You remember the long runs but forget the competition he was generally playing against with all those long runs. Most of them came against Mac level schools. When Adams played against the big boys his production fell through the floor as shown above.
See my point now?

15 yards down field and then run another 50 yards for a TD. This is where 99% of Adams yards after contact came from, from HIM making contact with DBs with his long arms. This is not a bad thing, he used what he had to his advantage...but he was absolutely NOT in any way, shape, or form, a tough runner or a tackle breaker. He was a soft runner and about 95% of the time, if a defender made contact with him, he went down.

saying Dexter should have played more than Adams but 3 full seasons of that duo getting at least a 60/40 or 50/50 split would have been a great duo. Much better than a 90/10 split. It would have made the offense and team much better. Also, would have relieved a lot of the beating Adams too, and kept him fresher.
Kelly accumulates good talent, but he misallocates it some of the worst ways thinkable.

It's true he was a let down, but still a quality back...just not the same player after breaking his leg his Sr year of HS.
I still hold that if we had got the same player he was before that injury he would have been amazing, and I'm going down with the ship believing that.
