Their best defensive player.

He's had the worst luck when it comes to non-game injuries. Last year, he was gone for a large chunk of the season due to a non-football injury, and then this year, he has a freak non-contact injury during practice.
He single-handedly turned the tide of that Syracuse game with his game play.
If we lose to Pitt, BK and Jacko should be fired.
Probably.

Of course they are two causally disconnected events.
It just so happens that their bad luck lined up (in an almost literal sense) with our bad luck. It was "fair" distribution of bad luck, if you will.

These things start to mount up by the middle of the season. This is where depth and resiliency kick in. This kid has a hard luck injury history, not unlike Shaun Crawford. Really sucks. But good teams play past injuries, as we have so far this year. Also remember 2012 against Pitt when Gholston went down. Enter Tom Rees, who saved our bacon. Winners find a way.

any other he had had at ND. Which kind of surprised me when he said it as there are so many freshmen on this team that are on the travel squad.

If this team progresses, depth, balance and speed/conditioning will be the difference.
