He would never be given the control he has at Bama if he wanted to come to ND.
It was quite possible at the time.
Some big victories (against ND and OSU), but many very mediocre (~.500 seasons). He never won a bowl game at MSU.
Saban is much better when his talent is an order of magnitude better than anyone else's. SEC schools gave him the opportunity to recruit players that the Big Ten could not (fewer prostitutes in the Big Ten).

Also, I don’t think Saban would coach where he couldn’t cheat. Don’t get me wrong, he is by record possibly the best CFB coach ever. But Alabama is the culmination of his career- bring in anyone who can excel on the field, don’t worry if they can’t cut it in class because they do not have to, keep getting rid of the players he does not want and elevate the ones he does. Players understand their sole responsibility is to satisfy Nick, not to graduate. They don’t care because they all expect to earn millions in the NFL so he brings in the best of the best athletes. Add to that he is a workaholic superb organizer who can get whatever assistant coaches he wants and get them to perform for him, even that asshole Kiffen for a couple of seasons.
