In 2002 we went on the road undefeated at 7-0 and returned home 8-0 (after defeating FSU) to face a mediocre ACC team (BC) in November, with a QB who was dinged up from the previous game...we broke out the Green Jerseys that day for a little extra motivation and it ended in complete disaster.
To my recollection (someone with a better memory please correct me) every time we have broken out the green unis against mediocre, or slightly better than mediocre opponents it has ended badly and here we are breaking them out against 4-5 FSU... really hope I'm wrong, but just feel like this has train wreck written all over it.
Touchdown Jesus..The famous Dan Devine green jersey game of Oct 22, 1977, has given a perception that they are used primarily for motivation..The eventual 49-19 of the highly ranked Trojans gave rise to that..But its simply not the reality..What no one mentions is that Devine's IRISH wore them every home game thereafter till Devine's s retirement in 1980..Including a 7-4 season in 1979..
Green jerseys , like blue, have had their ups and downs, its not the jersey..Green was prominent during the 87-11 Frank Leahy era; conversely Joe,( 17-23) Kuharich at times outfitted the Irish in green..In 1963, Hugh Devore deployed green against the Cuse in the finale of a 2-7 season...Bob Davie's Irish wore green in a 1999 Gator bowl loss to G aTech, Holtz led ND wore green in the 41-24 loss to Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl of 1995, WEis' Irish of 2006 wore them 2006 senior day in a romp over Army..Faust's IRISH beat two bad USC teams in green...
In summary, there are numerous other examples..and its not like ND is so lucky in the traditional navy, having not won a title since 1988..Let's get Over this green jersey angst; Im thrilled to see them back..Every ND SENIOR class should wear them at least once..
Almost too perfectly. Kind of eerie.

This is their last home game. Let them go out on their terms!
after all , at the start of the season, a fair number of people questioned whether ND could achieve double digits. When we do that tomorrow, we can reassess where we stand and move on. It will be, I think, from a position of strength.

the often trivial material or mental 'thing' that is used to achieve motivation...or realize how much motivation plays into determining the winner.

Funniest was when Faust broke them out at halftime of a USC game we were already kicking ass in.
It's better when it's a surprise instead of a big production.
How fired up would the team had been if they thought they were wearing the regular Navy uni's only to return to the locker room after warms ups to see green jerseys waiting for them in their respective lockers (just like Devine did and I believe Weis did for the 2005 SC game)?
Of course these days, no one can keep a secret ever. Someone on the staff would have blabbed about it as soon as they found out.

Amen brother
I think they'd look kinda cool. Better than what they're going to wear at Yankee Stadium.

And florescent pink pants . . . of course.
other factors have been at play. Bad timing in my view. But what do I know?
..against an unranked 4-5 team, not so sure about that. History speaks against it to the best of my memory.
How many players on the current roster have any idea what you're talking about?
Imagine being in high school and wanting to put names on the back of your jerseys or some such and someone said "no Chris, back in 1980 we did that and we got beat so bad idea." You'd think they were crazy.

.. except I didn't say it was a bad idea. I just pointed out that it is bringing up some bad memories and adding to an already bad vibe, but now that you mention it I'll say it now...I think it's a bad idea and I'd rather be thought crazy than proven a fool because I refused to learn from the past.
Anyway, Notre Dame has worn green four times in the Kelly era, all against mediocre opponents, and they are 4-0.

..coulda swore Kelly was the coach in 2011.

That wasn't ND "breaking out the green jerseys." That was ND and Michigan agreeing to wear special "retro" jerseys as some kind of commemoration of the anniversary of UM's first night game or something. If I remember right, that season was rife with lots of teams wearing alternate jerseys. If was certainly a painful game we'd all like to forget.
Why would those count but not the 2011 michigan game?
I think the issue you raised with the thread is the "breaking out the green jerseys" thing that we've seen from ND football over the years. The Shamrock Series is a different phenomenon. As was the UM "Under the Lights" game. Rocket, at least, was talking about actual green jerseys. But still not the same as ND deciding to wear green against BC back in '02 or this week against FSU, etc. So in that back-and-forth with him over the Kelly era and wearing green, your point is valid. I agree with you there.

So I guess you wouldn't count it when Lou broke them out vs #3 Florida in the '92 Sugar Bowl?

.. Kelly lost to michigan in 2011 with ND in Green Jerseys.
