And that's totally appropriate. But he's actually a very smart guy.
His specific comment: “I am a strong advocate of consistency within a program, sticking by a leader, supporting them and helping them and their team improve'' is one that I thoroughly agree with. Both Dean Smith and Coach K once had people screaming for them to be fired. Same with Chuck Noll. Bill Belchick was fired from the Browns. Imagine if they gave him 5 years to figure things out. Same with Frank Beamer after 6 years and only 2 winning seasons.
Sometimes it takes a guy a while to figure things out. If Helton doesn't rebound next year, then Swann can move on. But I wish there was more dedication to a coach for 6+yrs in CFB than there is.
1. Lynn doesn’t like Notre Dame. Unfortunately, in 1973 he survived a Luther Bradley’s hit that he received during the ND game. He did subsequently have a great career with the Steelers. He attempted to run for Governor in PA, and thankfully was thoroughly rejected.
2. Lynn is correct in establishing stability at the head coach position. His comparison to Brian Kelly’s situation was appropriate.
3. Clay Helton did prepare a winnable game plan vs Notre Dame. Fortunately, the ND players arose to the occasion, and the coaching staff recovered from an abysmal game plan. Clay’s post game comment ‘Win it All’ was a class act.
4. The USC fans as pointed out by Lou are “Spoiled Children’ who conveniently overlook the ’pay for play’ policy and outright cheating of their athletic department and University. Of their two prominent players, one killed his wife, the other took significant payment for playing for USC. Both are EX-Heisman losers.

Unless they have the magic hire already lined up (if that even exists), this would be a bad move. USC needs to accept that they caught lightning in a bottle w/ the Pete Carroll hire. Those magical hires only happen once in a generation, and even then their on-field success was overshadowed by the the off-field thuggery and cheating.
Screw them. May Clay be just good enough to not get fired for years to come.
I actually think Mike Leach would be a great coach for them, but he probably has too much baggage. Kyle Whittingham would be a good choice. Matt Campbell's name will be linked to every high profile job until he leaves Iowa St. Same with Jeff Brohm at Purdue.
Mike Leach would be scary at Southern Cal. With the resources and talent he would have he could build a powerhouse.
...except when it's bluer.
Is there someone in the coaching ranks who could make and immediate impact on the program and if not why make the change just to keep the team embroiled in a coaching mess and search by hiring someone who is likely out in two or three seasons?
I don't understand Swann's comment about him not being hired to make big changes.
If I'm Swann I go about a search quietly and get my Swann's all in a row, and if Helton cannot show real signs of turning the program around, make the change. The problem seems to be more than just Helton or Head coaching at USC; it's the culture that was Peter Carroll and when he left, he left a program that was filled with problems deeply entrenched that even he didn't want to deal with - and of his making.
This to me this is more like NDNation moaning over choices - fickle and childish.

Estimated damages are in the hundreds of millions of dollars. They're already up to their ass in debt, they can't keep jacking up tuition, because just as nearly every other uni, they're experiencing a dwindling number of potential admits. The least of their problems is hiring a new head coach. If anyone is outta touch, it's the LA Tines and delusional fanboys who refuse to see the obvious.

His medical license stripped after he was fired for being a pilfering crackhead. He was found in a South Pasadena motel with a meth whore. Med school applications have fallen, no one can explain how this guy got away with his bullshit, the school faces the real possibility of losing NIH/NSF grants which are the resources for medical research. Yeah, they've got a whole lot more pressing issues than a HC....
